We met in 2010 while working at Zappos which turned into a "will-they-won't-they" saga that lasted few years until we decided to go all-in around July, 2013, a love well worth the wait.
Dan had a plan; to rig cameras on a kayak to capture a surprise proposal in the middle of a paddle trip around the coast of our Jamaican resort of Tower Isle. The reality; the cameras were not easily mountable on the sleek two-person ocean kayak and I noticed the lack of Dan's assistance in navigating the ocean waves. "What are you DOING back there? A little help would be nice! BE PRESENT and quit with those cameras." To which Dan responded with, "Well, will YOU take a picture of us?" Little did I know, (or see) that Dan was behind me with ring in hand while I was taking the photo. Yes, I was taking a picture of us selfie-style in the front of the kayak with his phone, but the sun was placed in such a way that I could not see the screen I was looking at. When I tried to hand Dan back his phone he didn't grab it right away and kept asking me to turn around. Finally when I turned with a frustrated, "WHAT?!" there he was grinning from ear-to-ear with open box in hand. "Baby, I love you so much. Will you marry me?" "YOU'RE PROPOSING IN MIDDLE THE OCEAN?," I screamed because I was in a yellow puffy life-jacket that did not give much ability to turn my head to see him during this life-altering moment and I couldn't spin around to face him for fear of tipping us over, (we were in deep water KAYAKING the ocean, after all.) "Yeah... this went better in my head," he said, "Let's get to shore so I can do this right." Once we arrive to shore, staff from the resort start pulling our kayak in and asking how the trip went. I screamed, "He proposed!" and about 15 beach-front staffers started screaming, clapping, and singing Beyonce's "Single Ladies." Dan got down on one knee and out of nowhere, a resort photographer swept in and started taking pictures of the moment. Such a happy day.
Jamaica is a state of mind.
