No, a passport is only needed if visiting the British Virgin Islands while here. If you have one, we suggest you bring it.
AT&T cell service and sprint work best while here. All other carriers will offer spotty service, but WiFi calling will work. Make sure roaming is turned off, as our island accidentally picks up service from the British Virgin Islands.
Once you fly to St. Thomas, van, taxi drivers will be waiting outside of the airport. You will ask for a ride to Redhook. The taxi ride will cost approximately $15 and takes about 30 minutes. Once you are at Redhook you will take the people ferry. The ferry ride is $8, plus $4 a bag. The ride is approximately 20 minutes. The ferry runs on the hour, every hour until midnight. Once the ferry docks in Cruz Bay, you are now in St. John! Welcome to paradise!!
Sunscreen can be pricey on island. If possible it is suggested to purchase reef safe sunblock prior to your trip to island & then check it in your luggage. Boats do not allow spray sunblock to be used on board. Other helpful items to pack: *cooler bag for the beach *reusable water bottle / yeti cup
In STJ we love to enjoy the fun in the sun! Beach clothing, hiking gear, UPF shirts, & bathing suit coverups are always essential. When you’re not at the beach bathing suits should always be covered. When the sun goes down it’s time to enjoy the warm and breezy nights. Laid back summer clothing is always a must. No need for heels or fancy shoes, we still play in sandals at night😎 A light shawl or sweater is nice to have as well. Feel like you forgot some essential clothing pieces? Don’t stress! Mongoose junction ( in Cruz Bay) offers many amazing shopping options. Clothes, bathing suits, souvenirs, jewelry, beer, and more! Easy, free parking. Have fun checking it out ❤️💛💚
On STJ we only have Caribbean banks & our stores do not offer receiving cash back when checking out. If you would like to avoid banking withdrawal fees, we suggest bring cash from the US. Cash is the only means of payment when using taxis and at selected restaurants and bars.
In STJ we drive on the left hand side of the road, but in American made vehicles. Our roads are very hilly and are narrow. We suggest renting a car with 4/all wheel drive; Jeep rentals are great. We do have limited taxi service on island. Most taxis will take you to designated spots such as the beach or restaurants, but not to villas. We will have a private taxi to help with rides on the night of the wedding.
