Although we both attended the University of Oregon, it took flying halfway across the world for us to finally cross paths. In the Summer of 2010, we separately enrolled in a study abroad program in Copenhagen, Denmark. We were looking forward to 2 months of exploring new places/cultures/food, but neither of us expected to walk away from the program with a best friend in tow! We first met at the opening student reception, a few days later Jade would be spending all her free time at Holger Danskes Vej (Huy's dorm building) where we started to get to know each other. Group activities like a cruise to Oslo, nights at Kulor Bar (& then suffering through 3 hours of Finance the next morning), metro rides throughout the city, and dinner dates (to avoid the shared kitchen...yikes), were just a few of the highlights of their adventures. Throughout this time, Huy and Jade really enjoyed each other's company, sense of humor, and willingness to never say no to sushi! Fast-forward to after studying abroad, we started taking a few classes together in the business school and seeing more of each other at Greek events. This quickly turned into hanging out outside of class (& forced study sessions...Jade's a huge nerd). Huy knew that the feelings he started to develop in their time abroad was just the start and that he wanted Jade to be the one. Meanwhile, Jade was clueless and saw Huy as one of her best friends...up until KD's Tacky Sweater party 2011. Between peppermint patties and trying to hunt down Jade's lost little, Huy shared his feelings to a shocked Jade. Long story short, Jade can be a little dense and it took her a few more months to wrap her head around Huy's feelings. After receiving a heartfelt handwritten letter from Huy, a few amazing Eugene nights, and many (MANY) discussions, we officially started dating on May 20th, 2012 and have never looked back!
We started looking at engagement rings together in November of 2017. After a few months, we finally found the perfect diamond and started designing the ring of Jade's dreams. Fast-forward to March of 2018 and we're headed to Napa, California for a friend's wedding. The week before we leave, the engagement ring is nowhere near complete and Jade is told the ring won't be finished for a couple more months. Little did she know, I had been working on a secret timeline with the jeweler. With the ring squared away, I started working through logistics for the proposal. After many hours researching, I found an incredible winery that checked all the boxes. I hired a photographer and videographer who were "there to take marketing photos of the venue" to capture the moment. The ring gets finished two nights before we leave for Napa and off we go! Things were smooth at the Airport, the drive from SFO to Napa, and the resort we stayed at was incredible. However... The night before the engagement it was pouring rain - and this is coming from a couple of Oregonians! To add to the nerves, a stranger began aggressively screaming and pounding on our cottage door at 2am....and 2:30am...and 3am! After a few different check ins with security, Huy went to sleep looking forward to a fresh new day! The next morning we headed to the winery and by some miracle the weather completely cleared up 5 minutes before we arrived - perfect timing! We walked inside, had a glass of wine and then walked outside to the front of the winery (a picture perfect white house, complete with a white picket fence and a tulip lined walkway), where I finally popped the question. Afterwards, we took our private tour of the winery, which ended with the most perfect wine tasting set up, including framed photos of our adventures throughout the years, flowers, and candles!
