(30 minutes slightly north and east of Mackinac)—Cedarville and Hessel—is where Reid and Jake met. Things to do in this area include hiking to Narnia, golfing, taking a kayak tour through Woods and Waters (https://www.woodsandwaters.eco/), fishing or taking a boating excursion with Island Charters (https://islandchartersmi.com/request-a-trip), tasting local spirits at Les Cheneaux Distillers, visiting the Maritime Museum or the Historical Museum, and eating at one of a couple of lakefront restaurants.
Another island only accessible by ferry but permitting cars, Drummond Island’s attractions include touring the DeTour Reef Light (call 231-597-6844 for more information), off-roading (https://www.visitdrummondisland.com/off-roading.html), beaches, hiking trails, and other natural features.
worth a trip despite the small size of the museum. The actual bell for the Edmund Fitzgerald is housed there.
Tahquamenon Falls is a beautiful state park in the Upper Peninsula 1 ½ hours from Mackinac. There are trails to explore and the largest waterfall in Michigan at this park. The park is handicap accessible and you can reserve a track chair there (906-492-3415) to make accessing the upper and lower falls easier.
Sault Ste. Marie, MI (1 hour north of the Island) has the Soo Locks between Canada and the US and if you get lucky, you can watch a freighter go through from Lake Superior to Lake Huron or vice versa. You can book a ferry ride through the locks yourself as well. Nearby, there is an old freighter that has been turned into a museum (the Museum Ship Valley Camp). And there’s a casino in the Soo as well.
Ocqueoc Falls in the Lower Peninsula is a waterfall you can actually swim in. There are also good hiking and biking trails there. It is about an hour south of Mackinaw City.
Petoskey, Harbor Springs, and Charlevoix (all in the Lower Peninsula) are lovely shopping areas with nice restaurants and interesting stores.
