Things To Do

Obviously, we want you to have a wonderful time celebrating our wedding with us, but we chose to have our wedding in the Hills because we love spending time here and we want you to enjoy the beautiful location as well. There are so many lovely places to see in the Black Hills (that aren't just Mount Rushmore) - and lots of delicious places to eat, too. Consider making a long weekend of your trip if you can!

Sylvan Lake Shore Trailhead

Custer, SD 57730

This is a lovely trail to hike if you want a leisurely hiking experience that still provides beautiful scenery. This trail, which makes a full loop around Sylvan Lake's shoreline, is rated easy on AllTrails.

Black Hills Burger and Bun Co

441 Mount Rushmore Road, Custer, SD 57730
, (605) 673-3411

Delicious burgers! Might be crowded, even early in the season, so plan to go early and get your name on the list.

Little Devils Tower

SD 57730

This is a great hike that offers views comparable to those you would see while hiking Black Elk Peak, but the trail is usually less crowded than the Black Elk Peak trails. The trailhead is close to Sylvan Lake. Moderate difficulty.

Miner Brewing Company

23845 U.S. 385, Hill City, SD 57745
, (605) 574-2886

This brewery is right next door to Prairie Berry Winery (they're owned and run by the same people), and both serve light meals or appetizers (think sandwiches and flatbread pizzas), so there's something for everyone! There's lots of outdoor seating if the weather is nice.

Black Elk Peak Trail

Sylvan Lake - Harney, Keystone, SD 57751

Black Elk Peak is the highest point in South Dakota, making it an unbeatable hiking destination in the Black Hills. Moderate to Difficult hike, about 7 1/2 miles round trip.

Skogen Kitchen

29 North 5th Street, Custer, SD 57730
, (605) 673-2241

Awesome brunch place in Custer. They have a very small dining room, so go early to be guaranteed a table.

Needles Highway Scenic Overlook

South Dakota 87, Custer, SD 57730

Driving Needles Highway is a great way to experience some scenery if you're not up for hiking. There are scenic outlooks along the way where you can stop and enjoy the view.

Bobkat's Old Fashion Purple Pie Place

19 Mount Rushmore Road, Custer, SD 57730
, (605) 673-4070

The Purple Pie Place was a popular weekend stop for us when we were camp counselors. They have a wide selection of pies (by the slice) and ice creams. There's also a purple pig statue out front that makes for a cute selfie. :)

Jewel Cave National Monument

11149 U.S. 16, Custer, SD 57730
, (605) 673-8300

Jewel Cave is a unique place to visit, and the cave tours are cool and educational. There are also lots of trails in the area around the cave, and you can learn about the geology of the Black Hills in the visitors' center.

Alpine Inn

Hill City, SD 57745
, (605) 574-2749

This is where we went for our first "real" date. Their dinner menu features two options - a bacon wrapped filet mignon or spaetzle primavera. (we always get the filet.) For lunch, they specialize in German food, but also have a variety of sandwiches and salads. They only accept cash, but there is an ATM on the premises.

Sylvan Lake Lodge (Our Reception Venue)

24572 South Dakota 87, Custer, SD 57730
, (605) 574-2561

Our reception venue - for reference on the map above

Outlaw Ranch (Our Ceremony Venue)

12703 Outlaw Ranch Road, Custer, SD 57730
, (605) 673-4040

Our ceremony venue - for reference on the map above

For all the days along the way
