Welcome to Baltimore! Here is a list of places that Helyn loves or considers quintessential Baltimore locations.
These parts of Baltimore are about as safe as any other major city. For the more downtown locations you may want to go during the day just to be extra careful.
American Visionary Art Museum
800 Key Highway, Baltimore, MD 21230
If you go nowhere else, go here. It's one of Helyn's favorite museums of all time. It also has a particularly excellent gift shop.
Baltimore Center Stage
700 North Calvert Street, Baltimore, MD 21202
Professional theater company. Helyn saw the shows Fun Home and Indecent here.
Canton Waterfront Park
3001 Boston Street, Baltimore, MD 21224
Take a walk by the water or just sit and take in the views.
Cards, Comics, & Collectibles
51 Main Street, Reisterstown, MD 21136
Great comic book store with a nice indie comics selection. Next door to Wear It's At thrift store.
Charles Theatre
1711 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201
Independent movie theater with unique offerings.
The Charmery Hampden
801 West 36th Street, Baltimore, MD 21211
The Charmery is an ice cream shop that has multiple locations. It's most notable for its Old Bay flavored ice cream.
Collectors Corner Inc.
7911 Harford Road, Parkville, MD 21234
Comic book store and Scott Steppa favorite.
David Chu's China Bistro
7105 Reisterstown Road, Baltimore, MD 21215
Great kosher Chinese food. The Szechuan Tofu (spicy with brown rice) is one of Helyn's absolute favorite foods.
Goldberg's New York Bagels and Coffee
1500 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD 21208
A kosher establishment with great bagels and other brunch food. Really gives you the feel of Jewish Baltimore.
Hampden
Falls Road, Baltimore, MD 21211
Probably Helyn's favorite neighborhood in Baltimore. Hampden has book and craft stores (check out Atomic Books and Lovelyarns), restaurants, vintage clothes, and lots of other fun and funky independent shops.
The Jewish Museum of Maryland
15 Lloyd Street, Baltimore, MD 21202
Helyn volunteered/interned here for several years. They've recently undergone renovations/rebranding.
The PaperMoon Diner
227 West 29th Street, Baltimore, MD 21211
Near Johns Hopkins. A restaurant that really embodies Baltimore quirkiness.
Quarry Lake
Pikesville, MD 21209
Literally walking distance from the wedding venue. A quarry that was filled in with water and is now a little lake. You can walk around the water or go to the shops and restaurants nearby.
Red Emma's Bookstore Coffeehouse
3128 Greenmount Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21218
A leftist bookstore. Like, very leftist. You've been warned. Great for finding feminist reads.
SCRAP B-More
913 West Barre Street, Baltimore, MD 21230
A creative reuse center. Basically secondhand craft supplies at a great price!
The Senator Theatre
5904 York Road, Baltimore, MD 21212
Historical movie theater built in 1939. Lots of mainstream offerings with a few more unique movies.
Seven Mile Market
201 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD 21208
Considered the biggest completely kosher grocery store in the country. It's a cultural experience just to walk around in there.
The Walters Art Museum
600 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201
A more traditional art museum. Helyn once got to see some of their archival collections, including an original Arthur Szyk haggadah.
Wear It's At
49 Main Street, Reisterstown, MD 21136
Great thrift store. Next door to Cards, Comics, and Collectibles.
