How We Met

Our freshman year at UCLA, we met each other through a campus ministry called Cru and quickly became friends. Spring quarter, we took a class together and walked to class together twice a week, getting to know each other on a deeper level. The summer following, we took a trip with a group of friends to Yosemite. At that point, both of us had a crush on each other. Our romance began with the high stress climb of Yosemite’s Half Dome. We decided to spontaneously make the attempt with friends who we were visiting the park with in September 2017. For those who have done this hike before, they know that it is a difficult hike and can be dangerous with unfavorable weather. Once we arrived at the base of Half Dome, there were strong winds, thunder, and storm clouds in the distance. Like typical college kids, we all decided to proceed despite possible danger ahead (looking back on this adventure, we realized how wildly unsafe this was). A quarter way up the cables, most of the group decided it was unsafe and climbed back down. Faith froze on the cables, unsure of whether to continue or not. Jacob stuck with her and told her he would go with her if she hiked up the dome, encouraging her with scripture & a reminder of the tremendous view that awaited. We ended up forged ahead and climbed up the cables, just the two of us, creating the beginnings of a sweet bond. Just a month later, we became boyfriend and girlfriend. This began a journey of continuous learning and adventure. All the memories of trying every other burger spot and French restaurant on the Westside of Los Angeles, going on numerous hikes, late night study parties, and thoroughly romantic conversations in UCLA dorm stairwells are held close to our hearts. At the end of the day, it is not these feelings, but an understanding that we do not complete each other and have to cling to Jesus that has formed the core of our relationship.

Who We Are

It would feel that our story was incomplete without giving you a look into our past year. After living 30 seconds away from each other during the school year, we had a period of true long distance. From September 2019 to November 2019, Jacob went to volunteer in Armenia through a birthright sponsorship program (he is half-Armenian). We remember having tough conversations of how to prioritize each other, despite having a 12 hour time difference and our own responsibilities. We both battled feelings of painfully missing each other. It was during this time that we really got to understand how grace really works. We both believe that every human being is broken from the start. We can have this brokenness redeemed through our relationship with Jesus, who gave himself as a perfect sacrifice. By being filled up by that grace ourselves, we can pour it out onto each other. In our relationship, we saw this grace through all the people in our life that pointed us back to Jesus, both individually and as a couple. Needless to say, these lessons were often forgotten. Through living across Los Angeles (Jacob commuted to finish classes at UCLA), to navigating dating, engagement, and a wedding in a COVID reality, it seems as if we have equal parts moments of joy and moments of trial. This has only made our love for each other grow much deeper. On August 21st, Jacob popped the question at Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego. This place is really special for us and holds beautiful memories of joy. Jacob: “The idea of spending the rest of my life with Faith brings me great peace. She balances taking me as I am while also pushing me to be the best that I can be. I know I want to be by her side.” Faith: “I had never had a boyfriend before, but soon after starting to date Jacob, I realized this would be the man I would marry. He is the most selfless, genuine, and compassionate man I have ever met.” Time to celebrate!
