When We Met

May 18, 2014

We met at a dinner, art, and music night hosted by our mutual friend's creative community in Cambridge, MA. We are so grateful to the friends that connected us. We shared a dance that night, but our story really begins on the 4th of July, 2014. On our first date we rode our bicycles through Boston to the Institute of Contemporary Art Museum. Upon viewing an art piece with sheet music of songs Jaclyn recognized she began to sing them. Prompting Ben to turn to her and say: Ben: "Jaclyn, I really like you" Jaclyn: "Thanks! I don't know you yet." That evening and over the next few weeks, months, and years Ben and Jaclyn got to know each other very well. As our July 4th adventure continued, our bicycles carried us back to Cambridge to find a spot on Memorial drive for the Firework spectacle. The sound of the Beach boys singing "Wouldn't It Be Nice" amplified across the river to greet us. It was a lovely firework show, but ended early because hurricane Arthur had other plans. After a warning to seek shelter we hopped on our bicycles though it was already too late. A wall of rain swallowed us whole momentarily separating us. We found each other soaked to the bone and stopped to warm up over hot tea and conversation. When the café closed we weren't ready for the evening's adventure to end. Back in the warm summer air we found ourselves attracted to the nearby park. Thoroughly enjoying Ben's company Jaclyn asked him for a dance. And having decided she really liked him too, gave him a kiss. That kiss launched us into the adventure of a lifetime. Though we eventually had to say good night and part ways that night it was merely an au revoir.

The Proposal

8/24/2018

That morning we woke up bright and early for an ambitious journey. Since we started seeing one another we had grown very fond of each other's company, whether it be on snowy days where the city became the arctic or on any old Thursday making dinner together and watching cartoons. Plus, we've been biking together since day 1. This fine day, 8/24/18 was going to push our limits and bring us closer than we could imagine. While Jaclyn repeated aloud that we had everything we could need for a 65 mile bike ride and two day camping trip, I was making sure the ring was in a safe spot. Soon as we were set, we hit the road, just the two of us on our bikes. We toured through the postcard-esque small towns and countryside of Eastern Massachusetts, pit-stopped in its second biggest city and made our way up some large hills. At one point Jaclyn was struggling up a hill. I thought, "Oh jeez, am I going to have to propose in the ED?". She called out "how much longer?" , I replied "6 miles". She got off the bike, stretched, and hydrated now more determined to complete the ride. This display of grit and determination only further solidified my desire to marry this woman. In the hot August sun we powered through the final stretch of highway, walked our bikes through a mosquito infested horse path. At long last we made it! We found our campsite nestled in between pine trees, not far from the very inviting pond. As we unloaded I was careful to not get caught with the goods. When Jaclyn was crouched down finishing the set-up of the tent she asked me for the stakes. This was my moment! I carefully place the ring in a geode before crouching down beside her and asking, "Hey I found this funny looking rock. Wanna see it?" In an exhausted confusion, she humored me. Jaclyn discovered this was no ordinary rock. Her eyes wide and body shaking I asked, "Jaclyn Wood, will you be my adventure partner for the rest of our lives?" Sealed with a kiss. "I will".
