Question

What does "Sewanee Black Tie" Attire mean?

Answer

For those who have visited the University and attended a typical Sewanee "formal", this may come easy to you. For others, think of it as a range of Cocktail to Black Tie - whatever you prefer. Here's a quick rundown on what we've coined as "Sewanee Black Tie"! Men: Dark suit, nice shirt, festive tie. Want to step it up? Rock a tux or velvet blazer - and yes, that classic Blackwatch plaid blazer you've been dying to wear would be perfect. Ladies: Long dress or fancy cocktail number. And for the love of all things holy, bring a fancy wrap or coat because it's COLD on that mountain! (Basically, dress like you are going to an elegant winter soirée...on top of a cold mountain..in the South.)

Question

Is there parking for the ceremony or reception?

Answer

Ceremony at All Saints' Chapel: Street parking is available near the chapel. We encourage carpooling with fellow guests to ensure everyone can park nearby. Reception at The Sewanee Inn: The Inn features a large parking lot directly adjacent to the building for your convenience. Shuttle Service: Complimentary shuttle service will run between All Saints' Chapel and The Sewanee Inn throughout the evening, so feel free to leave your car at either location.

Question

Do you have any hotel recommendations?

Answer

We recommend the Sewanee Inn, listed in our "Travel and Lodging" webpage. The Inn will host the Reception, and it is the only hotel on the Sewanee campus. It is a very short walking distance to most events. However, many houses on campus are available for rent and always have unique and charming character. Contact Megan Miles at (985) 869-0189 for information on renting a house.

Question

I have never visited Sewanee, what should I prepare for?

Answer

Two words: Come Prepared! Sewanee is a beautiful and unique place that is dear to our hearts, however, it lacks in amenities. The nearest town, Monteagle, is about 7 miles away or an 11 minute drive, which includes the nearest grocery store (Piggly Wiggly) and pharmacy (CVS.) While Sewanee has basic amenities, be prepared that "running down the street" is not as close as it seems. Sewanee weather is also unpredictable, so we would recommend being prepared for a variety of weather, specifically rain or snow. Backup outfits and clothing are recommended. Check the weather before packing!
