Snow Geese Migration

Snow Geese Migration

Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area, Choteau, MT 59422

We chose our date to overlap with the migration's peak! Thousands of birds rest here during their journey from California to their nesting grounds in the Canadian arctic. We hope you can take some time to check this out Bring: warm layers, binoculars, camp chair or something else to sit on, bikes for traveling the non-vehicle access roads Morning and evenings can be good viewing windows, as birds fly to and from the grain fields for feeding. Weather can push birds ahead of schedule or hold them back any time of day, making viewing unpredictable. All part of the fun! Snow geese mate for life! ;) At the link below, click "Migration Status" tab to see latest bird tallies, updated once or twice a day. Click "WMA Map & Information" tab to plan your visit

Skiing

Skiing

The lift-served terrain at Teton Pass is relaxing and delightful. We love the tree skiing and fun gullies! The main chair climbs 1,000 vertical feet to a high point of 7,200 feet. The ski area is open to the public Fri-Sun. For more information, visit skitetonmt.com If you are coming from out of the area, you might want to enjoy a day skiing en route in Whitefish, Essex, or in the Bozeman area at Big Sky or Bridger Bowl. If you are flying into Great Falls, Showdown is another classic small Montana ski area Backcountry skiers will love Teton Canyon. Above and beyond the ski area, skin/bootpack to the summit of False Lockheart or Joe's Wave, on the looker's right side of the peak. These zones return to the ski area. Heed ski patrol recommendations for this avalanche terrain Further afield, we enjoy skiing into Waldron Creek from False Lockhart or the West Fork of the Teton from Joe's Wave. Both involve skinning back to the road and taking that back to the ski area

Sightseeing & Scenic Drives

Sightseeing & Scenic Drives

We recommend looking into the following possible destinations when putting together a sightseeing route for the Rocky Mountain Front: Bynum, MT — JD's Wildlife Sanctuary (a bar) & the Montana Dinosaur Museum (open by appointment in winter: book via mtdinosaurcenter.org) Gibson Reservoir St. Mary (Glacier National Park) via Duck Lake Road or Hwy 89 Please drive with caution on local highways especially if it is windy. There is a high likelihood of encountering snow drifts or whiteout conditions on the road. This is a rural area so be prepared with a full tank of gas, downloaded area maps, and other common-sense car things like jumper cables and a shovel
