Roughly half an hour away from Mathews, Gloucester offers a number of restaurants including the Sweet Tooth Cafe, Olivia's, and the Gloucester Brewing Company. Take a stroll through the historic old-town center, and don't forget to take a picture at the big chair!
The site of Cornwallis' surrender to the American army, Yorktown has historical homes, beautiful trails, and museum of the revolution. If you need a pick-me-up, stop at the Mobjack Coffee Roasters while you're in the area.

The state capitol of Virginia, Richmond is a short hour-and-a-half drive away from Mathews. Historic Maymont is a gorgeous old country estate, Carey Street is a great stop for some local shopping, and the VMFA is one of the best-curated art museums on the east coast.
