Downtown Mathews
The county seat of the Mathews county, Matthews is perfect for a half-day trip. Every Saturday there's a market where you can find jewelry, gifts, flowers, produce, pottery, art, and more! For our antiquarians out there, there are half-a-dozen consignment stores to check out in town
Historic Gloucester
Roughly half an hour away from Mathews, Gloucester offers a number of restaurants including the Sweet Tooth Cafe, Olivia's, and the Gloucester Brewing Company. Take a stroll through the historic old-town center, and don't forget to take a picture at the big chair!
Historic Yorktown
The site of Cornwallis' surrender to the American army, Yorktown has historical homes, beautiful trails, and museum of the revolution. If you need a pick-me-up, stop at the Mobjack Coffee Roasters while you're in the area.
Colonial Williamsburg
Take a step back into history by visiting Colonial Williamsburg. Also home to beautiful William and Mary, there are historical re-enactions, fun shops, and the outlet mall a short drive away. If you're in the mood for some lunch, check in at Cheese Shop in Merchant's Square for a great sandwich!
Busch Gardens Williamsburg
For our thrill seekers out there, Busch Gardens is chock-full of exciting rides and great food! With the international theme and plenty of activities for all ages, Busch Gardens is a perfect day trip for the whole family.
Richmond
The state capitol of Virginia, Richmond is a short hour-and-a-half drive away from Mathews. Historic Maymont is a gorgeous old country estate, Carey Street is a great stop for some local shopping, and the VMFA is one of the best-curated art museums on the east coast.
