Located on 1,597 acres along the shoreline of the John H. Kerr Reservoir (also known as Buggs Island Lake), at the convergence of the Dan and Staunton rivers. The largest lake in Virginia is only one of the park's many attractions, which include a swimming pool, camping, cabins, picnic shelters and nature trails.
Wiiliam Henry Hudgins, a personal Aide to President Truman, traveled extensively and sent treasures from around the world back home to be incorporated into his garden designs. The organically maintained botanical gardens, arboretum and wildlife sanctuary contain beautiful, meandering paths, lined with boxwoods and dogwoods, revealing some of his treasures like a 1st century Roman bust, a Spanish Cloister, imported fountains, and much more. There is also a museum of Indian artifacts and a newly developed herb and wildflower garden featuring a wide variety of culinary, medicinal, tea, and dye plants.
