It definitely wasn't love at first sight because we don't remember the day we met. We actually aren't even sure on the year. If you know, please tell us. Seriously. We'd really love to find out. The first time we would've been in the same room was Fall of 2016. We attended the same church and had some mutual friends. Over the coming months, we became casual acquaintances. Every few weeks, we'd have a conversation about documentaries we'd recently watched. Icarus. What the Health. You name it. If it was about Russian doping, the dangers of meat and dairy consumption, or anything else as far removed from romance as possible, we discussed it. We continued doing this for a long, long time. Eventually, when a married couple we were both friends with moved to Birmingham in the summer of 2018, we started hanging out pretty frequently. Sometimes it was us and others. Sometimes it was just us... on dates that weren't technically dates. In September of 2018, four defining weekends changed things: a drunken birthday weekend, a 'definitely not a date' to watch Crazy Rich Asians, a weekend at Pilgrimage Festival, and a weekend of barhopping downtown amongst a few thousand Eagles fans. Jack realized that he was now *really* interested in this fun girl from Philly. So he did what any normal guy would do. He waited for months and months to ask her out because he was nervous. Eventually, he got tired of the dates that weren't actually dates, and he asked a friend if Katie was interested. When he got a "she's not going to say no if you ask her out" response, he made a move. And everyone is so happy he finally did.
2020 started with Katie getting an exciting job offer to move back to Philadelphia and accepting it in early February, only to have a tornado tear through her neighborhood literally the next day, and then be told she was being furloughed a week later (good thing we don't believe in omens). This chaos unexpectedly was a bit of a blessing in disguise, giving us 4 extra months together to cook, watch movies, complete puzzles, go on hikes, and spend so much quality time together in Nashville. August came, Katie got the go ahead to move north, and Jack luckily was still working from home, allowing him to spend weeks at a time in PA with Katie. Katie had a ton of unused vacation days, and spontaneously asked for a week off in November to just relax. Jack didn't hesitate to book a flight so that we could then spend the few days Katie had off together. Little did Katie know, Jack was already scheming. Jack arrived in PA and promptly got to work, enlisting Mike and Lisa's help in driving him around Philly to scout out the perfect spot while Katie was at work. A day later, Jack casually mentioned that he had bought tickets to Morris Arboretum for Saturday because it was supposed to be the one day without rain. Katie was intrigued, but didn't want to get a head of herself. Saturday morning came, and Katie thought her and Jack were hitting the Arboretum and then an outdoor beer garden with a friend. She was still a little suspicious, but then Jack came downstairs in his "Shoot your shot" t-shirt that Katie does not approve of, so she was instantly convinced a proposal was NOT happening. Also, her mother was acting pretty cool, and Lisa's not that cool under pressure normally. We had almost finished walking through the Arboretum, when Jack took Katie's hand, got down on one knee, and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him. It was an immediate YES! and we cannot wait for the rest of our lives together.
