Things To Do

Arco de Santa Catalina

Arco de Santa Catalina

28 5a Avenida Norte, Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala

The arch was built in the late 17th century (around 1693–1694) as part of the Santa Catalina Convent. It served as a bridge connecting the convent to a school on the opposite side of the street. Its primary purpose was practical: cloistered nuns could cross between buildings without going out onto the public street, in keeping with their vows of seclusion.

Cerro de La Cruz

Cerro de La Cruz

Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez Department, Guatemala

Cerro de la Cruz is a famous hill and mirador (viewpoint) just north of the historic center of Antigua Guatemala. Its name literally means “Hill of the Cross,” and it’s one of the best places to see the city and the surrounding volcanic landscape from above.

Iglesia de la Merced

Iglesia de la Merced

6a Avenida Norte, Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala

One of the most beautiful and important churches in Antigua Guatemala — is a standout example of colonial Baroque architecture and a key cultural and religious landmark in the city. The church and adjoining convent were designed by architect Juan de Dios Estrada and constructed between 1749 and 1767, during the height of Spanish colonial influence.

Casa Santo Domingo

Casa Santo Domingo

28 A 3a Calle Oriente, Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, Guatemala

Of course we had to add our wedding venue in the list! This luxurious hotel, spa and museum has so many sights, architecture and art. If you have time, book a massage or visit their delicious restaurant. The property sits on the site of the former Convent and Church of Santo Domingo, once one of the largest monasteries in the Americas. It was badly damaged by the 1773 Santa Marta earthquake and left in ruins for centuries. In the late 20th century, archaeological excavations uncovered buried structures, artifacts, and even crypts. These were incorporated into the design when the monastery site was transformed into the hotel and cultural complex
