In the world of physics, 1 + 1 = 2. Simple, logical, and expected. But every now and then, life writes its own rules -- and two people come together in a way that feels more like 1 + 1 = 5. It's the kind of synergy where you become a better person, live life more joyfully than you ever could alone. Over the past three years of dating, that's exactly what we've experienced -- and it's why we're so excited to spend forever together. We first met at church during our PhD studies in Pittsburgh. Right from the start, there was something special about how our strengths complemented each other. Moonyoung’s faith was grounded in biblical knowledge; Hye Mi’s faith was rooted in love and service. Together, our different perspectives deepened our understanding of God’s love and overflowed into how we served our church community. Beyond church, we found that same synergy carrying us through our PhD life. Earning a PhD is often compared to running a marathon. And having actually run a half-marathon together, we can confirm: the analogy is 100% correct. There were days when Moonyoung wanted to quit but Hye Mi had the energy to cheer him on. There were days when Hye Mi was ready to give up, and Moonyoung’s hope helped her push just a little further. Our journey became more bearable and even more joyful because we had each other to lean on when the finish line felt so far away. We also came out with a little less scratches because we were there to hold each other when one was about to fall. That’s the magic of 1 + 1 = 5. And just to keep things interesting — we’re a little (okay, a lot) competitive with each other. We love challenging each other over the smallest things: who can run one more mile (our running competitions on the Nike Run Challenge actually sparked the beginning of our relationship), or who can read one more chapter in the Bible for our daily devotions (which led us to read the bible the more than we've ever before). Our playful rivalry has led us to run further, read more, and grow stronger in ways we never expected while also having so much fun.
