Our love story started the way all great love stories start: in the dark, dingy Science Learning Center in the University of Michigan's chemistry building. Emily was sitting alone studying before her freshman chem 101 class. Patrick was supposed to be writing an essay but he was too busy staring at the girl sitting across from him. As Emily got up to head to class, Patrick followed her out of the library, tapped her on the shoulder, and asked her out for "cawffee" in his ridiculous/adorable New Jersey accent. We've been together ever since. We spent our college years studying together, eating take-out noodles, and trudging to class through brutal Michigan winters. We did have some fun though exploring Ann Arbor, going to Michigan football games, trying new restaurants, and, of course, playing with our puppy, Maizie (featured prominently in the "gallery" tab). We moved in together while Patrick completed his Master's Degree in Mechatronics and enjoyed cozy evenings cooking together and watching movies in our apartment. We then spent two years long-distance while Emily did her Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling. Even though we were living 400 miles apart, we spent our precious time together traveling (we went to Portugal and Switzerland!) and talked every night on the phone. Patrick spent six months planning his proposal to Emily. He enlisted the help of their friends Alex, Cade, Jackie, Jordyn, Julia, and Theo to execute the ultimate scavenger hunt proposal. The scavenger hunt included 26 meaningful stops across Ann Arbor from our seven years together. The stops included the location of our first coffee date, the spot where Patrick met Emily's parents (Dominick's), and many, many more. Each location had its own handwritten riddle and wax sealed envelope with one of our friends meeting Emily there. Along the way she got coffee and ice cream (fuel is important on a two-hour scavenger hunt). The 27th stop was for a new memory: a proposal underneath U of M's Engineering Arch with a photographer hidden in the bushes. Legend has it that anyone who kisses underneath the arch at midnight is destined to be married. Even though it was 2:30 PM in Michigan, it was midnight somewhere.
