How We Met

Hope’s perspective

Caleb and I have known each other since middle school. We met at a mutual friend’s party and from the moment our eyes met there has been a spark—more like a jolt of electricity—that just seemed to form an instant connection. Since that moment I have always felt something special for him. We would run into each other at random places like the beach or at college events and the same spark would light up my world. It wasn’t until after we both graduated college that we went on an actual date, but boy what a date it was! I won’t go into detail, but he made me feel alive and free that night. Now, almost four years later, I still feel such a strong connection with him and after all we have overcome, I know that our love and commitment to each other will last a lifetime. There are so many things I am unsure of, but Caleb being my soulmate is not one of them. He makes me a better person. He grounds me. He is so strong, steady and consistent. He was the missing piece to mine and River’s puzzle, but now we’re complete.

The Proposal

Caleb's View

To begin, readers need to realize I had attained the ring in October. Once I had that in my possession, all I needed was the perfect timing for the act. Of course I drug my feet as long as possible to assure that Hope's anxiety would be at its peak. In March, I finally decided it was time. The day before, I called Hope's dad to meet up with him for our "talk" where he eventually gave me his blessing to marry his daughter. Now, all I had to do was not screw up asking. The day was planned. I discussed with the photographer how I wanted her to be hidden to capture the whole scene, and we set a time to be at our location for the proposal. We started the day at Little Rock City. I'm sure Hope knew nothing was up due to the amount of pictures I was willing to take. When the arranged time came closer, my nerves skyrocketed. I awkwardly rushed our date on to the next step. Our first date began on a pontoon where I picked her up from the pier at Yellow Creek Falls. Hence, the location that I had in my head for the perfect moment. By forcing her to get out and walk out on that pier while we were supposed to be getting her a dress, I had her right where I wanted her. For those of you familiar with this area, you know that the falls are to the left while a not so scenic bridge is to the right. I did not anticipate the direction in which the photographer would be taking the picture. My impeccable plan was to have her look at the falls so that when she turned around I would be on a knee with the ring gleaming. Well.. that didn't quite work. Plan B persisted to awkwardly tell her to look at the bridge (away from the falls) and throw her hands up for a picture. I fumbled nervously to get the ring out and muttered shaky words that caused her to say yes to something I'm still not sure she agreed to. However, whatever was said made me the happiest human on the planet when I heard yes. Having that beautiful woman in my arms made all those nerves ease and I haven't looked back since.
