Our Story

For those that don't know, Steven and Kara were acquaintances during high school. Kara was attending Austin Prep while Steven was at Danvers High School. As you all know, Steven befriended everyone he met, and was friends with a lot of Kara’s friends from Danvers, including Kevin McManus and Amy Kennedy. Off they went to college, and reconnected Kara’s senior year. After a summer of playing hard to get and Steven pushing her in the pool at parties (classic Steven), Kara agreed to go out on a date with Steven, to nowhere else but Sylvan Street Grille. They happened to bump into Frank and Johnny, who of course Kara knew from the SMA days. This date followed by hibachi in April, prior to being introduced to the Hennessey side of the family without a heads up! She wasn't even sure she was officially his girlfriend yet. Later that night, they shared their first kiss, though Kara needed to go back to school that week. They stayed in touch and got back together in May, making it official in June 2014. Kara soon found out that she had thyroid cancer, and told Steve that he could step away if he wanted. Steven said no way, and has been by her side and has been her rock ever since then. Steven and Kara steadily grew their relationship, starting with a long distance relationship while Kara was in grad school in Connecticut; Steven frequently surprised her with weekend visits. In Danvers, they brought their friend groups together and continued to grow their love. In 2018, Kara and Steven moved into an apartment in Salem together for about a year, where so many memories with friends were made. Steven pulled off a surprise proposal in front of family and friends on December 21, 2020. Now, they are saving for a house to build the rest of their life together and celebrate their love for each other in front of family and friends.

The Proposal

Over the last two years or so, Kara had been asking Steven questions along the lines of, "Do you know my ring size?" and Steven's response would be "Don't worry about it." Granted, Kara knew it was going to happen at some point, though Steven never gave her any clues as to how and when. When they moved to Danvers, Kara assumed that an engagement would come in at least a year, since they were trying to save money for a house. Little did she know, Steven had been planning to propose for a few months, and started researching rings in the late summer/early fall. One night, Kara was waiting for Steven (for FOREVER) to meet her in Beverly for dinner. He said that he needed to stop to get gas and use the bathroom, but he was grinning ear to ear and Kara had no idea why. Later to find out, Steven had just come from asking Kara's parents' permission to marry her. A few weeks later, they were getting ready to head to Salem for the annual Santa Bar Crawl. They were planning to have a lot of friends gather at the house before heading to Salem; there were probably at least 15 friends present. Getting ready to call Ubers to head to the Townsends, Steven wanted to make a toast. Kara thought nothing of it, as they had been toasting a lot in the last month or two for her being cancer free. This "typical," as Kara thought, toast, quickly turned into a proposal. Kara almost dropped her glass; she was taken by complete shock. Steven asked Kara to marry him, and without any hesitation she said "Are you *expletive* kidding me! What! Yes!" This followed by a limo ride to pick up friends and Steven's parents, celebrate at the Townsends, then head to Salem for the bar crawl. Though Kara did not participate in the bar crawl, it was the best day of her life thus far. Steven planned it all and Kara had no idea. All Steven and Kara cared about was how loved they felt, how much they loved each other, and how excited they were to officially be fiances, and begin the rest of their lives together.
