How We Met

"So I met this girl at a bar..." 4/27/19

Hong had just returned from a trip to Peru in 2019 with her friend Soumya, also a mutual friend with Quang who happened to be meeting up with him for lunch a week later. As Soumya was showing Quang the photos of her trip, his eyes were immediately drawn to the attractive girl in the photos with Soumya. To his luck, she was single and a few weeks later Soumya arranged for them to meet in a spur-of-the-moment late night outing at a bar called Molly Magees. Even though they could hardly hear each other with the music blasting in the bar, they set up a date on the beach in Pacifica a week later and the rest was history.

The Proposal

Let’s taco about love 1/2/2021

The weather gave it away! Quang had everything planned - from the photographer hidden in the crowds, to the celebration with family afterwards. He told Hong to dress up nicely since they were going to meet up with his friend from high school (which wasn't a lie - the photographer was indeed his friend from high school) and then grab dinner with the family. What gave it away was that the weather was cold so Hong wanted to wear tights under her dress. Being an obvious fashionista, Quang wasn't going to let this clothing catastrophe ruin his proposal photos so he put a hard stop to that. But Hong knew him well and she definitely knew that he normally values her comfort over all else, including his stylist tastes (ha!). That gave her a tip, but when he dropped to one knee in front of the Palace of Fine Arts, she still excitedly said "Yes!" and the rest was history. Afterwards they drove across the Bay and enjoyed a wonderful taco-themed party with her family.

How We Got Married

The living room union 5/21/21

This is probably less romantic then our other stories. Short story: We got married in scrubs after work in Hong's sister Thanh's living room with her brother John being the officiant. Long story: This wedding was actually supposed to happen 3 years ago at a different venue. We had planned to get married shortly after residency and actually put a deposit down at a different venue in Emeryville, CA. After realizing how busy life was after we graduated from residency, we had second thoughts about having a wedding. With a stroke of luck, the restaurant realized that they double-booked our date by accident and thus fully refunded our deposit. But with time and settling into our careers, we decided that now would be an amazing time to celebrate our love with friends and families.
