My first impression of Will was that he was genuine, charismatic and a little out of place. I couldn't figure out why this tall, cowboy boot-wearing man from Alabama was teaching at a Quaker school in Palestine. Others must have been intrigued too, because "Ustaaz William" quickly became a well-known figure throughout the town. As we would walk through the streets of Ramallah, young men would greet us and offer us a drink or a falafel sandwich, wanting to tell stories or crack jokes with "el Ustaaz". It didn't take long for me to notice his dedication to his teaching and our first "dates" were often lesson planning and grading sessions over Arabic coffee. And then, when we first danced together at an Arab restaurant hosting a salsa night (!), the spark was lit. He had another side to him: creative and fun-loving with a hint of showiness. Three years later, when we decided to return to the US and take our relationship with us, it grew to something more than a travel story. We began to talk about what partnership could look like. Will's subsequent decision to move to Pennsylvania and invest in my home community of Huntingdon was a turning point for me. I have always been strongly tied to my family and Will's willingness to share that with me is the best gift I have ever received.
