We met on a sunny Summer Wednesday when Susie made her way down to the river to try something new. Hollis was there giving surf lessons and after being introduced and clearing the large strand of snot from his upper lip, Hollis proceeded to help Susie catch her first waves and then we went our separate ways. Later that evening we randomly ran into each other again, Hollis was getting a burger and Susie came to listen to some live music. After some small talk (mainly about Survivor, adventure racing, and massage therapy), we've been inseparable ever since.
Ever since Hollis and I met, we were full steam ahead for Expedition Africa Adventure Race. Whether we were figuring out what sweet oversized vehicle I'd be driving and possibly living in while in South Africa or Hollis was out on a 12 hour adventure run/get-lost-Susie-come-to-the-rescue mission, most things in our relationship were Africa focused. I'd be lying if I said that the thought of marrying this man hadn't crossed my mind before May 15th, 2018, but it couldn't have been further from my radar upon getting to Cape Town, South Africa. After getting settled in our little Airbnb bungalow for a day, taking a stroll on the beach and mostly in and out of napping consciousness, Hollis took me out to dinner at a local winery. As we were strolling through the rows of grapes prior to dinner, Hollis stops to grab a quick photo, setting it on timer and "MacGuyvering" his phone to a post. Naturally, we held still for those few awkward seconds, then we confusingly asked, "Did it go?" "Did it take?", and that's the moment he proceeded to get down on one knee, and with a little catch in his voice asks, "Will you marry me?" (all the while actually video taping the proposal.) After a slight moment of shock, absorption of the news and my immediate response to start backing up, I obviously said, "Yes!" I like to say that I'm a pretty lucky girl, but really...he's a pretty lucky guy!
