Our favorite restaurant. We've been here dozens of times - to celebrate birthdays, new jobs, and other milestones; we've taken family and friends; we've gone here just when we've had nothing else to do and want a truly impeccable meal. We can't recommend it enough. Stroll through Washington Square across the street before or after for some of the best people watching.
A top wood-fired pizza joint. We've spent many summer nights dining al fresco here. For the Tom and Abby special, go for the Little Gem Caesar salad and the San Daniele pizza.
If you're one of the lucky ones and manage to snag a reservation, this not-to-be-missed Israeli restaurant will blow you away. Reservations are released 4 weeks to-the-day, at 11:00 am EST, in advance of the reservation date on Resy.com. You can try walk-in if you're open to sitting at the bar (which is also great).
Amada is Chef Jose Garces’ flagship restaurant in Philly, offering a modern take on traditional Spanish tapas in a rustic-chic setting. Since 2005, it has been a go-to spot for shareable plates like tortilla española, garlic shrimp, and paella, complemented by an extensive Spanish wine list and sangria. We love grabbing bites here!
A fun, relaxed restaurant serving up unique wines and delicious bites. This was a common happy hour spot for us when living in Philly, but they also serve brunch and lunch on weekends.
Where we had our engagement party! Pop into Positano Coast for a drink, or stay for a seafood-forward Italian meal in a vibrant setting that's giving Positano vibes.
Tuna Bar is a sleek Japanese raw bar serving up sushi and shareable small plates. It has a relaxed upscale vibe and features fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Standout dishes include the Liberty and Broad Street rolls, creamy rock shrimp, and wagyu beef spring rolls. Their cocktails are also excellent. We recommend booking in advance!
A casual brunch spot that's - dare we say - eggcellent. We love the Jerzy Roll (says the people who now live in Jersey), but go for the Brekkie Bánh Mì if you're feeling a bit more adventurous. Be prepared for a line!
Swing by this walk-up window for fresh-out-the-oven sweet and savory hand pies, coffee, and other fun treats. The Apple Pie hand pie is a stand out, if it's not sold out.
Honestly, all the cafes in Old City are wonderful. But Menagerie has Abby's heart forever. Their iced dirty chai latte is perhaps the best in the city (she's tried A LOT), and their homey vibes make for a great place to chill, chat, or read.
A delightful, European-inspired bakery café run by the sweetest owners. Stop by for a quick bite, or grab a coffee and stay awhile.
Practically our neighbor while living in Old City, Cafe Olé has been a staple for us. It's a colorful café with a warm, community feel that's been open since the 90's. They serve Mediterranean-inspired breakfast and brunch, and are best known for their shakshuka, paninis, and strong coffee. We also love their iced tea on a hot day - ask for a mix of their hibiscus and green tea flavors for some serious refreshment.
Be prepared for some of the largest portions you've ever seen at this iconic Jewish deli. It's been operating since 1923, and has maintained its 20's flair. The walls are covered with famous faces and family photos. This is the type of place where all the staff calls you "hun" and "sweetheart." You'll feel right at home.
Yeah, we know. You're coming to Philly, so you want cheesesteak recommendations. If you ask Tom what's the one place to check out in Old City, he'll say Sonny's. He says it's a true *Philly* cheesesteak (take that for what you will).
We would be remiss not to mention Tom's favorite cheesesteak place, which has been slingin' cheesesteaks since 1979. It's a 15-minute walk from the Marriott, with fun shops to browse along the way. But, to be clear - this is a no-frills place. Expect nothing fancy!
Grab an ice cream at this Philadelphia institution. You'll feel like you're in another era as bow-tie-wearing staff dispense classic ice cream parlor and soda fountain treats in this old-timey space.
If we've ever brought you a box of macarons, they are from this place. They are amazing!
Grab a sweet treat at Tartes - a tiny pastel-pink bakery known for its single-serve tarts, cookies, and pastries made fresh daily. It's a beloved local spot for seasonal tarts like bourbon pecan, key lime, and chocolate crème brûlée, and its charming walk-up window makes it feel like a hidden gem.
The area surrounding Independence Hall features a bunch of historical sites - like the Liberty Bell, Independence National Historical Park, Thomas Jefferson Garden, The Magnolia Garden, and more. But the real reason to visit is this is where Tom proposed to Abby - in the park behind Independence Hall, called Independence Square, right near the Benjamin Rush Garden.
Take a leisurely stroll through the oldest, continuously inhabited road in all of America. These are some of the cutest little rowhomes you'll ever see, and really feels like you've stepped back in time.
You're in Philadelphia, after all! Take in some history and check out one of the city's most popular historical museums.
Established in 1976, and situated on Philadelphia’s Independence Mall, the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History is the only museum in the country dedicated exclusively to exploring and interpreting the American Jewish experience. The museum was originally founded by the members of historic Congregation Mikveh Israel, which was established in 1740 and known as the “Synagogue of the American Revolution.”
The Museum for Art in Wood is a free and welcoming spot that celebrates all things wood - sculpture, furniture, design, and more. It features rotating exhibits, a cool permanent collection, and a curated retail section that offers handcrafted items by artists and makers working in wood, including original artwork, jewelry, unique furniture, and one-of-a-kind objects.
Cherry Street Pier is a mixed-use public space on Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront. It's been transformed from a historic 1919 shipping pier into a creative hub, featuring artist studios, rotating art exhibits, markets, and live events. Visitors can also enjoy The Garden, an open-air bar and eatery with great river views. The pier especially comes alive on First Fridays (September 5th). Check it out for some of the best views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge!
If you know us, you know we love to read, and we love our book club! Pop into this cute local book shop and pick up your next book. Their selection is excellent.
If you're a board game person, this place is for you. Grab a game, a snack, and a cocktail and get playing! They also have a puzzle store and offer plant-based fare.
Pulpery Studio is a sustainable crafting space that specializes in recycled paper-making and eco-friendly art workshops. Founded by artist Katie Hansen, the studio offers beginner-friendly classes in papermaking, bookbinding, linocut printmaking, and more, all using recycled or natural materials. If timing works out right, try a workshop! The studio also features a retail section on Saturdays 12-6pm with handmade journals, stationery, and gifts crafted by local artisans.
Before heading out Sunday, check out the weekly Farmers Market that sets up in The Shambles, the same location as our cocktail hour! Beyond the fresh fruits and vegetables, you can also find a great selection of locally prepared foods and goods such as bread, soup, baked goods, coffee, beer, wine and more. The market is open 10am-2pm on Sundays only.
