We will have a Renewal ceremony starts at 4:00 PM PST with Reception to follow
The story starts with Katie and Kellita trying to find a 3rd roommate for the house they were renting near SDSU in 2015. Through Craigslist, they found Julie Walker who was moving out to San Diego from Kentucky to work in Student Ministry. Julie was involved with a developing church called Encompass where she invited her roommates to join her for church and events. Katie and Kellita went bowling with Julie and the church group in Spring of 2016 where they met David Hills who was a prominent member of Encompass. He started conversing with Katie about her bowling skills and David's lack of bowling skills. They ran into each other at other Church events over a few months before David tracked Katie down on Facebook to ask her on a date. Katie was terrible at checking her Facebook account and it was not until 1 month later that she saw and accepted the invite. They shared their first date in September of 2016.
Both Katie and David are huge dog lovers and decided together (with much nagging from Katie) they were ready to get one together. David wanted a big dog that he could play with and Katie wanted to adopt one from a local shelter. They took their time looking at dogs that would be allowed and comfortable in their home (also potty trained was a plus). David came across Kona a Border Collie at the Oceanside Humane Society and after deliberation of driving 45 min to look at a dog, they went for it. After meeting Kona, it was love at first sniff and they took him home the same day. Kona is a lovable, happy ball of energy that keeps David and Katie running around. Though he is adamant of his 6am walks, they couldn't imagine now their life without him.
Katie had gotten home from a long day of work on a Wednesday. We had just had an incredible weekend for my birthday going to Universal Studios and to Knott's Berry Farm. We had talked about going to the Dodgers game since they were in town in SD that week and had missed the games in LA over the weekend. So when Katie got home, she was surprised to only be greeted by our dog, Kona. 20 minutes later David showed up wearing a suit. Katie was surprised but due to David's schedule Katie was used to weekday date nights. She got all dressed up also and we went out to dinner, watching the Dodger game. Then when we got back home, David surprised her with proposing. Turns out the incredible weekend was planned to be the proposal, but the ring was not ready in time. It all worked out with having good food, a good time, and hanging out at home with our new dog.
Leading up to our wedding day, we knew we would not be able to have a wedding as planned due to the Pandemic. The thought of guests getting sick was the cause of most of our stress the days before, but everything worked out for the best. We were incredibly lucky with having such a beautiful day with a rainstorm the weekend before and a state shutdown the weekend after. The small group of participants gathered at Mt. Woodson Castle for a lovely service with a spunky flower girl, an eloquently spoken minister, and wonderful friends and family. The reception was hosted by Debra and Matt Knutson at their backyard with delicious home cooked food, fun music, and a great end to an amazing day. We appreciate everyone who helped us to make our wedding possible and for those who could not be there in person but still gave love and supported. We hope to finally celebrate with all of you this November!
