Byblos is Cosette's hometown and one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It offers historical monuments, beaches, restaurants, old markets, and nightlife. The ruins of many successive civilizations are found at Byblos, one of the oldest Phoenician cities. Byblos is a testimony to a history of uninterrupted construction from the first settlement by a community of fishermen dating back 8000 years, through the first town buildings, the monumental temples of the Bronze Age, to the Persian fortifications, the Roman road, Byzantine churches, the Crusade citadel and the Medieval and Ottoman town. Byblos is also directly associated with the history and diffusion of the Phoenician alphabet - The origin of our contemporary alphabet.
This Phoenician city, where a triad of deities was worshipped, was known as Heliopolis during the Hellenistic period. It retained its religious function during Roman times, when the sanctuary of the Heliopolitan Jupiter attracted thousands of pilgrims. Baalbek, with its colossal structures, is one of the finest examples of Imperial Roman architecture at its apogee. The cornerstones of the earlier temple at Baalbek have been found to weigh over 100 tons and the retaining wall monoliths weigh, each, 300 tons, leaving present-day archaeologists, scientists and historians mystified as to how the stones were moved, where from, and in what way they could have been manipulated into place. Baalbek is best visited with a tour guide, it's a full day activity where you could enjoy the site and eat local food Sfiha.
A monumental underground karstic wonderland. Jeita Grotto is a spectacular underground system consisting of two separate cave systems intertwined with one other, with a total astounding length of 5.6 miles (9 kilometers), making it the longest cave system in the Middle East. The Lower Cave is home to an underground river some 3.9 miles (6.2 kilometers) long, while the Upper Cave features innumerable dazzling rock formations including one of the largest hanging stalactites in the world, measuring 27 feet (8.2 meters).
The Qadisha valley is one of the most important early Christian monastic settlements in the world. Its monasteries, many of which are of a great age, stand in dramatic positions in a rugged landscape. Nearby are the remains of the great forest of cedars of Lebanon, highly prized in antiquity for the construction of great religious buildings. Many attractions exist in the area: Cedars of God forest, Kadisha valley and caves, Bsharri town, Museum of Gibran Khalil Gibran, Kadisha Grotto, Deir Qannoubin / Mar Lichaa / Saint Anthony Monasteries.
Lying at the outskirts of Downtown, Mar Mikhael is a quaint area dominated by art spaces and artisanal shops by day and restaurants and bars by night. It is home to Beirut’s favorite architectural relics, to its unoccupied train station and some of the the best night experiences in the Middle East.
In the mountains of Metn, there are many villages and areas that one could visit. Baskinta is the hometown of Hicham. These areas offer great hiking trails, restaurants, and summer activities.
