Pronounced "Ta-GAN(rhymes with van)-ick" The tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi River! It is a glorious waterfall and one of the most accessible. There is a terrific overlook (with parking lot) or a flat, easy mulched 3/4 mile hike to the base of the waterfall (from a different parking spot). For more active folks, the rim and other trails are great! The other side of the road (same park) has a nice lakefront area and view. *For all of Ithaca's parks (Taughannock Falls SP, Buttermilk Falls SP, Robert Treman SP), if you pay for parking at one, you can use the receipt at the others on the same day (only pay once). These are contributions towards park upkeep so follow your heart :)
Another of Ithaca's beautiful waterfalls. This one is named for the way the falls look like buttermilk. This is one of Heidi's favorite hiking waterfalls as one of the trails (Gorge Trail) goes through close to the gorge and gives really beautiful views of small pools, up close walls and smaller falls. The trails on Lower Buttermilk (Gorge Trail and Rim Trail) will require some good knees for the stone steps. Some of the trails are short but are climbing (fair warning for those with bad knees!). The big falls and most popular trails are located at "Lower Buttermilk". Upper Buttermilk offers flatter hikes to a beautiful lake. Both should be gorgeous in the autumn. This one is for the hikers. I'll give you a bonus point if you hike the full loop. Treman offers GORGEOUS (yes, I keep using that word, have to use the tagline- Ithaca is Gorgeous) hikes for those with good knees and cardio fitness. The Lower Falls are beautiful and just a short walk from the parking area for those just wanting reward without the work :) Lucifer Falls is only viewable from the trails unfortunately but what a beautiful one! There is a very cool old water mill (historic building) available right next to the Upper Treman parking lot. *For all of Ithaca's parks (Taughannock Falls SP, Buttermilk Falls SP, Robert Treman SP), if you pay for parking at one, you can use the receipt at the others on the same day (only pay once). First Dam is named as the first dam along Six Mile Creek (I guess on Google Maps it is called Wells Falls- who knew?!). Park at Mulholland Wildflower Preserve. This is flat trail going up Six Mile Creek from the same parking lot. Or cross the bridge west overlooking the waterfall, on the right hand side of the road, there will be a (semi) graveled trail leading down towards the bottom of the falls (5 minutes). It can be slick/ steep to some so take caution. It is just a lovely little spot right near downtown Ithaca.
Terrific waterfall can be viewed from the street but worth it to park and take a short walk to its base. This is relatively handicap accessible with views from the sidewalk and down a short (less than 5 minutes) trail. This is Heidi's favorite "drive by" waterfall.
A favorite waterfront park in Ithaca. Offers beautiful lake views, playgrounds, a forest birding spot, and connects right to the Cayuga Waterfront Trail (8 miles long and follows the shore). A terrific activity to walk from here to the famous Ithaca Farmer's Market. I believe there are kayaks/ canoes to rent from here at times (Paddle N' More at Stewart Park). [This is also the spot where Heidi spent a summer chasing geese - banded 500 of them and used a drone, remote control truck and fireworks- it was a fun activity for sure. Feel free to curse and shake your fist at them so they know Heidi says hi]
Steamboat Landing hosts Ithaca Farmer's Market on the weekends. Well-rated and touted as a must-see Farmer's Market. It is a glorious and busy spot located right on the waterfront. It is wonderful to skip the parking traffic and walk from Stewart Park or further west along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. If you don't have room in your suitcase, just make sure to have room in your belly for some of the delicious treats!
A main attraction in Ithaca. This is the downtown pedestrian-only area with lots of shops and restaurants. Some of our favorite restaurants on the Commons include Viva Taqueria, Red's Place, Simeon's, Asia Cuisine, and many, many more new ones that always coming in!
Ithaca and the Finger Lakes are known for wineries. There are tons in the area, along with some craft breweries. Visit Ithaca website can point in some good directions if you partake.
A must-see for birders! I'm sure you've heard of this gorgeous migration stopover spot. An easy drive up to the very top of Cayuga Lake. If you've got a list to add to, chances are it's at Montezuma!
