How We Met to Now

Peter likes to start this story with "So I was homeless in Milwaukee..." and that is at least part of it. Peter was planning on living in Milwaukee in summer 2022 because of an internship opportunity, when through a series of events, got pushed out of a sublease and found himself living in his car on streets of an unfamiliar city. After a week or so of getting desperate for friends, a place to live, and his mom finding out about his unfortunate situation, Peter found himself with the phone number of an acquaintance from his family's home church who happened to be living in Milwaukee, attending Marquette University, (shout out Nathaniel). He put Peter's contact into a GroupMe full of friends, and shortly after, Peter wandered into my (Heidi's) Marquette apartment expecting a co-ed Bible study. Alas, much to Peter's dismay, no other guys showed up that night. I thought the new guy was cute - and told my roommate, Makayla, so right after everyone else left. Naturally, I found his Instagram page, realized he liked rock climbing, and decided to casually get to know him a little better. Peter, determined to not start dating anyone that summer, started to rethink that when he heard I liked anime and Super Smash Bros. After a few short weeks of getting to know each other, I used the rock climbing info to not so subtly hangout with him, and he took the opportunity to ask me out on a date. We played a pretty competitive game of mini golf and talked for a while over ice cream. The return of the school year meant distance - me still in Milwaukee and Peter back to Minneapolis - but we decided it was worth the risk. We made efforts for one of us to drive the 5 hours back and forth at least once a month. Trips to see each other meant meeting Peter's friends (some of whom were surprised I was real), fun dates like swing dancing, and sweet time together despite snow emergencies. We met each other's families around the holidays, and started thinking about what life would look life after college. In the spring we both got jobs in the Minneapolis area, and moving meant the drive to see each other went from 5 hours to 10 minutes! Peter planned a big surprise for Labor Day weekend and proposed on September 1st! Since then, we've been wedding planning, enjoying more and more time together, and becoming more and more excited for this summer, knowing that our wedding is only a beginning of life together.
