Diocletian's Palace is one of the best preserved monuments of Roman architecture in the world. It's also the center of the city's diverse culinary scene and nightlife. The Palace forms most of the city center of Split. The Riva (shoreline) runs along the southern end of the old town walls. This will be your home base for activities during your stay in Split.
Of all the stunning islands off the coast of Split, Hvar stands out as a must-visit. It is a charming town with trendy bars, cafes, restaurants, day clubs and a vibrant nightlife. Be sure to go to the rooftop in the Adriana Hotel for stunning (free) views with coffee or a drink. The ferry can take you to Hvar from Split in about an hour. We opted to take one of the many full-day boat tours that stop at several islands, including Hvar for a few hours.
Beach Ježinac is a 25-30 minute walk or a short bus ride from Diocletian's palace, perfectly located for a half beach day in Split. Enjoy this more relaxed and beautiful area of Split after you've explored the city for a day or two.
We stayed overnight in a small country house at Plitvice on our breathtaking journey from Zagreb (the Croatian capital city) to Split. This national park is a must-see when you visit Croatia. There are private 11 hour day trip tours from Split you can book through Viator or similar for ~$70/pp. There are breathtaking views the entire drive. If you have a car, it's a 2.5 hour drive and we recommend staying there for a one night adventure. If this doesn't fit your itinerary, we recommend Krka National Park which is just under 1 hour from Split. Seeing one of these parks during your trip to Croatia is a must-do!
Split has incredible restaurants with unmatched ambiance and scenery in the old town. We loved the creative Croatian cuisine, specialty cocktails and ambiance of Fig Split. This type of restaurant and location was our favorite.
With a shared history and close proximity to Italy, Split has incredible Italian cuisine. After you've enjoyed fantastic Croatian cuisine, you can't go wrong with pasta and pizza here. Bokamorra Haute Couture Pizza & Cocktails stood out as having the best pizza. It is across the street from Hotel Ambasador Split - a short walk from the Riva and Diocletian's palace.
