We have many suggestions for hotels below. We encourage you to stay in a hotel or bed & breakfast, but if that is not possible there are more ethical ways to stay in a short-term rental. We just ask that you be mindful of the problems facing local renters wherever possible.
We also highly recommend booking far in advance, because April is a very busy month in New Orleans! If you're having no luck with airbnb you might also try vrbo.
