Life Finds A Way

A Pandemic Elopement - July 31, 2020

On the onset of the Pandemic, we knew there was a likelihood that some of our most loved friends and family would not be able to make it to our wedding due to distance, safety concerns and all sorts of pandemic stressors. We spent most of April convincing ourselves that we were okay with this possible outcome. As we got into May, we started seeing fall weddings get postponed more and more and so we started discussing safety and back up plans with our nearest and dearest. And then we realized no matter what we did, there wasn’t a way to make a full scale celebration safe for some of the people we couldn’t do this without. So we postponed our wedding to next summer - July 31, 2021. But, we didn't want to wait. Life still goes on...so we got married this year, on July 31. We have updated our FAQ to cover some of the things that you may be wondering...of course, if we don't answer your question there, please feel free to reach out to either of us.

How We Met

We met in the fall of 2014 through mutual friends. He was in Covington, I was in Lexington. At the time, the distance felt like a vast ocean so despite a reciprocated interest, neither of us pursued anything more than friendship. After two years of friendship, we'd reached a point where we talked every single day and it was pointless not to admit we had feelings for each other - so we didn't.

How We Got Engaged

In early 2019, we binged the Office in entirety and when Michael was ready to propose to Holly he mentioned spending “three years salary” on the engagement ring. As a joke, we started trying to find a ring that cost three years of Mick’s salary. After a while, it just became us looking at engagement rings - which eventually became marriage talk. We have a habit of talking about something hypothetically to exhaustion, and eventually saying “when” and not “if.” On April Fools Day in 2019, we decided we were going to get married - we set a date and started planning. After a few months, Mick decided he wanted to propose traditionally. The plans went awry when the engagement ring arrived when I was off work and home. He hid it but I still pestered him relentlessly about its location until, a few weeks later, on September 14th 2019, he planned a surprise scavenger hunt full of nerdy references so I could find it’s precise location - a Golden Snitch that hangs from the ceiling in our living room. 🖤 We also have a habit of doing things backwards - after announcing our engagement, we decided the charade of a secret elopement was too stressful and changed our plans for a traditional wedding ceremony.
