Katie had mentioned long ago how fun and beautiful it would be to experience a sunset sail along the coast of Maine. I never forgot that. From that moment, I knew how I was going to propose to her one day. When the opportunity finally arrived, I searched for the perfect boat and chose the Cutter Owl out of Camden, Maine. I contacted the company, shared my plan, and they enthusiastically agreed to help make it happen. I reserved a two-hour private sunset charter, and the crew cleverly arranged it to appear as a regular ticketed cruise—allowing me to discreetly bring a photographer on board without raising any suspicion. Finding the right photographer proved to be the most challenging part. Fortunately, I discovered an amazing photographer who agreed to bring her husband along so that it would appear they, too, were enjoying a romantic evening sail. Once we departed the harbor and passed an island where a mother harbor seal and her pup rested, the captain leveled the boat “for better viewing and picture-taking of the seals.” That was my cue. I guided Katie along the side of the boat, where I asked her to marry me. The proposal unfolded exactly as I had hoped. I am deeply grateful to the captain and the photographer for helping bring this dream to life—and even more grateful to Katie for embracing this adventure with me and for saying yes to forever together.
