Although you may be staying in Providence, I highly recommend taking the ferry to Newport to spend a day checking out the mansions, taking the Cliff Walk, have a drink at Castle Hill, and sailing!

To do - Federal Hill (RI Little Italy), RISD Art Museum, Tour Brown University and surrounding mansions/neighborhoods (Benefit and Prospect street!), Waterfire Festival.
Other favorites - Beavertail State Park (best sunsets/sail boat watching), Westerly Beaches, Matunuck Oyster Bar, Antiquing and fresh lobster at Gardner's Wharf in Wickford, ferry to Martha's Vineyard or Block Island. Boston is only a 45 minute train ride from the downtown train!
