We found each other through a chance encounter singing karaoke at People Lounge in the Lower East Side. Fueled by rounds of bourbon, and the sounds of David Bowie and Natalie Imbruglia, Chris recalls it as "the best day of his life" while Sophie can barely recall it at all. Two days later we had our first official date at Troost in Greenpoint where we were relieved to find that we really hit it off. Since then we've had seven years of adventures across the United States and Mexico including late night dance parties, backpacking quests, road trips, more karaoke, costume parties, hot air balloon rides, protests, fantastical forays into the world of Dungeons & Dragons, yes, some quiet nights at home, and an unforgettable day spent at The Trolls Experience in Manhattan.
The past couple of years have been tough, we all know that, but we could not have been luckier in terms of our relationship and how much we were able to support and rely on each other during this time. During a trip to Portland, Oregon, Chris drove Sophie around the neighborhood where he had grown up with his dad and we took a walk around Portland University's campus to take in the views. He suggested we take a selfie (highly suspect) and when we did Chris was holding the ring up behind us. Sophie of course said "Yes" and gave Chris his own engagement ring in return. We then had a lovely evening drinking champagne, followed by a delicious dinner at The Chart House with Chris's family, and ended with a jam session in a garage with his friends!
