Learning the Anatomy of the Heart

Hannia and Mark met in the early days of medical school in January 2015. With only 62 classmates, they had mutual friends and fell into the same study group. They began spending significant time with each other. Eventually Mark decided to muster the courage to ask Hannia out to a local Italian restaurant (and Hannia said yes despite disliking Italian). On their first date they asked the usual questions. Mark then asked where Hannia wanted to eventually end up living and her answer took him by surprise- Charleston, SC (a place she had the opportunity to work as a medical scribe for 3 months). On the other hand, Mark and his family had discussed the plan to move to South Carolina (to be closer together as a family) and so his parents moved to Myrtle Beach in 2015, which ended up being only two hours from Charleston! It was at this point that they both knew this was no coincidence, but something much stronger than that. As they progressed through medical school the unbelievable amount of stressors reinforced and tempered their relationship; to reiterate what a good friend said, "If a relationship can survive medical school, it can survive anything". In third year, they moved to Tucson, AZ where Hannia got to experience a taste of Mark's collegiate experience at the University of Arizona. Afterwards, Hannia introduced the proud Texan life as they completed their medical education in San Antonio, TX. As if their story could not become more perfect, Mark was blessed enough with matching at his number one residency program in Neurology- Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and Hannia was able to integrate into MUSC as a Program Coordinator in Cardiology and research. Hannia's dream to move to Charleston and find a respectful and loving man became a reality, and Mark's dream to meet his perfect Mexican girl came true.

The Proposal

Mark had joked around that he would propose at graduation in Guadalajara. However, Hannia's one condition for proposal was not AT graduation. In her mind it would be some time after finding out the residency program and city to move, but Mark being clever decided the perfect time would be the day BEFORE graduation. After enjoying family time at Jose Cuervo Tequilera, Hannia and her family took a trip to another tequila distillery, La Cofradia- where Mark, his family, their friends and a Mariachi band were anxiously hiding. Hannia was shocked and overjoyed with surprise. She said yes! It quickly became a double celebration in a beautiful city with the people they love, which is now appropriate to come back to where it all began and celebrate with them!
