Though we both grew up in Baraboo, and our brothers were very close friends throughout school, we did not meet officially until June 6th, 2015. That night, Hannah's step-sister, Kristin, was hosting a get together and fire at her house in Cottage Grove. I had been coaching basketball with Kristin for the past two years at Monona Grove. Kristin had been working on bringing us together, and as luck would have it, we were both able to make it that night. Later that summer, on July 4th weekend, we had our second chance at getting to know each other at the Lichte Cabin, and the rest is history!
Devil's Lake has always been very special to us. We both wanted the engagement to happen, but in order to make it meaningful, we had to get back to the lake. So, in an effort to disguise my true intentions, I created a flyer for a candlelit hike taking place at Devil's Lake, for Friday, November 30th. Hannah adores those hikes, and we had already arranged to downhill ski at Cascade Mountain that afternoon. On our way to the lake and the "candlelit hike," we stopped for dinner at The Barn, the spot we shared our first meal together in Baraboo. At 830pm, it was time to head to the lake. On our drive down the hill into the parking lot, I was able to convince Hannah that I had seen the flames on the beach. We parked in an absolutely desolate parking lot, climbed out of the car, and made the hike to a perfectly calm, clear, and vacant beach. The lake was ours, alone. As Hannah looked out on the water, I went to my knee, shared how I felt about her and our future lives together, and she said yes!
