Noelle and Hannah were looking for friends and connections, both in the same place, where so many love stories these days begin - on Tinder. Dating apps are always a gamble, and it often feels like searching for a needle in a haystack. Both cast a wide net, setting their preferences to be open to anyone within 100 miles. More haystacks means more needles, right? Hannah was living in employee housing at Rush Creek Lodge, working in a youth development role that she had only recently started. After going to college in a small town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, she thought she would adjust easily. But Groveland was the smallest town she had ever lived in; her first time living in the West, in Gold Country no less, was a big adjustment for her. Luckily, something about those hills felt familiar, almost like home. Noelle was living with her parents in Turlock, working at Home Depot and finishing her degree. While the Central Valley was her home, Noelle always felt called to the mountains, visiting Tahoe with her family growing up, and feeling a connection with the land. Countless visits from her childhood to the Sierra Nevada Mountains made for a deep appreciation for nature, a love of rocks, and a desire to be closer to those golden foothills. Following California Highway 120 into the park, visitors pass the Iron Door Saloon in Groveland, a tavern that was the last stop for the 49ers as they trekked into what is now Yosemite National Park. Many miners wrapped a coin with a dollar bill and pin attached, and threw it towards the ceiling - if they didn't find gold, at least they would have some money for a drink when they headed home! While Groveland was a last stop and a last hope for many miners, it was where this love story really began. "You've Matched with..." popped up on both of their phone screens. So much excitement at the possibility of meeting and connecting with someone new. The conversation started with joy and excitement - who is this woman, what does she like, what makes her smile? It was easy for them to talk with each other, and after a week of messages, they both seemed to let loose a bit. The conversations became longer, more thoughtful, and full of intention. They typed out near novels to one another each day, taking their time to ensure they built a foundation of friendship based in authenticity. When it felt like messaging was no longer enough, Hannah made the first move. "Let's exchange phone numbers - I want to show you pictures of my brother and sister-in-law's dog, Pancake!" It didn't take long for the two to share all sorts of memories through photos. Then, there was a facetime call full of giggles and shy smiles. Soon after, they had their first date - exploring Groveland and the Sierras and enjoying the beauty the historical town. It was the longest first date either of them ever had at 18 hours, and yet the time seemed to fly by. There is a common joke in the queer community that asks, "What does a lesbian bring to the second date? A U-Haul! (Because lesbians move fast!)" While the pair didn't bring a U-Haul into the mix until a more respectable amount of time passed, their second date somehow outdid the first. A three day, two night stay in South Lake Tahoe was on the agenda for these early love birds. Another date in the Sierra Nevada Mountains brought them even closer. It was clear they were both falling for each other, and Hannah asked Noelle to be her girlfriend on that trip, on August 16, 2021. Nearly five years later, Hannah and Noelle are sharing a full and beautiful life in Groveland, CA. Looking back, the mountains were always an integral part of their love story. Their adventures and growth there have been magical, and they did it all hand in hand. When they first cast that wide net, they both knew that the chances of finding a needle in the haystack were low. Maybe it was the mountains, maybe it was pure luck, but in the end, they both found gold.
