Hannah and Lucas met in Hartford, WI, at a gathering of Ultimate Frisbee. Luke's friend Nathan invited him and his brother to join them on a spontaneous Saturday. Luke was very reluctant to go, but as usual, Nathan convinced him otherwise. Lucas can still account that first time going: "I still remember exactly the first time I saw her, and I recall thinking to myself 'Just don't try it', but as per usual, I didn't listen. I can still picture what she was wearing and who she was playing catch with." Hannah recalls thinking to herself, for the very first time ever, "That's a cute boy." Many months later, Luke and Hannah began emailing - something young homeschooled kids could do - and roughly one year after them meeting, they began dating, at the ripe old age of 16.
For Hannah's 19th birthday, Lucas got her Twenty One Pilots concert tickets - a favorite band of them both. They got all dressed up and visited the brand-new Fiserv Forum for their first concert together, and enjoyed an INCREDIBLE performance. It was when they returned to Hannah's house, under the lamppost on sixth street (like the Ed Sheeran song), that they embraced for their first kiss. A magical and memorable day!
Fresh off an afternoon of Ultimate Frisbee, Luke was planning to propose to Hannah. He recruited his friends to help plant the engagement ring for later that evening. His plan was to convince Hannah to go on a walk around a pond in Hartford, and relax at a bench where the ring was staged. With Luke's friends hiding in view, Hannah and Luke completed their walk, and were enjoying a moment of relaxation by a beautiful river. Luke determined that the best way to reach down to grab the ring in its case was to act as though he was "picking up garbage" that was strewn all around. "I couldn't come up with a way to bend down and look for it naturally, and there was a surprising amount of trash on the ground, so I figured this seems normal enough", Luke said. It wasn't normal. Hannah thought it was very peculiar and laughed it off. But while she was looking elsewhere, Luke emerged on one knee, ring displayed in hand. But she believed this to be a joke. "I thought he was fake-proposing with a piece of trash he found, which I thought was hilarious", Hannah said. After a moment or two of Luke waiting for her to acknowledge this, and her chuckling at this odd moment, realization set in. It took a few minutes of Luke in the proposal position, and the start of his proposal speech, for her to understand the gravity of the situation. Thankfully for Luke, she gave a very excited "YES!". As they embraced, Hannah detected they were not alone, and pointed out their sneaky friends hiding and giggling behind - you guessed it - a dumpster.
