Hannah and John first met when Hannah moved to Washington in 2016, but reconnected the next year, just a day before her birthday in 2017. For the next 10 months, they got to know each other, hanging out at John's shop were he worked on cars, going out to dinner, or watching movies at Hannah's apartment. They both secretly liked the other, but never took that next step. On July 13, 2018 (which was a Friday the 13th that year) while John was home on his two week break from fishing, he asked Hannah to be his girlfriend around the fire at a party. They went to Shari's at 2am for late night pie that night, and now make it a tradition to go get pie at Shari's on every Friday the 13th to celebrate.
High Rock Lookout was a hike that I had been wanting to do again since completing it a few years prior with my roommate, Alysa. When we went, there were white out conditions (both fog and smoke from wildfires) and we were unable to see Mount Rainier, which on a sunny day, is visible from High Rock. Alysa and I planned a double date with John and Alysa's boyfriend, Matt, to go on the hike and hopefully catch the beautiful view that we didn't see years prior. Little did I know, John had been planning the proposal with Alysa the whole time, and let me thought I made the plan / picked the day for the hike. As we all made it to the top of High Rock Lookout, Alysa had the Go-Pro so that the group could get pictures of the view. She told both myself and John to go to the furthest peak so she could get a picture of us with Mount Rainier in the background. As I turned back around from looking at the view of the mountain, I looked down to find John on one knee. Alysa sneakily brought champagne in her bag and after I said yes, we all were able to celebrate both the beautiful ring on my finger and the killer view. High Rock Lookout will now hold such a special place in my heart and always rank in my top favorite hikes.
