Restaurante Casa Oaxaca
Perfect high end preparations of traditional dishes with a beautiful terrace. We liked the downstairs bar for cocktails and snacks too.
Expendio Tradición
A relatively casual spot great for their small samplers of Oaxacan food like memelas and some of our favorite cocktails (Pictured is our favorite, the "Chapulín") This was the first dinner we had on our first trip to Oaxaca!

Upscale restaurant with spectacular architectural interior. The dishes are really indulgent!

La Mezcaloteca
Advance reservation required (via their website.) The best spot for a curated Mezcal education with bilingual bartenders. We stop in every time we're in town. It's also relaxing and quiet!
Los Amantes Mezcalería
Tiny, eclectic bar with its own brand of Mezcal and a guitarist in the corner.
La Santisima Flor de Lupulo
Local micro-brewery with a variety of beers.
El Destilado
Low-key bar/restaurant with cocktails and great guacamole. We just wandered in on our first visit and really liked it.
Centro Cultural Santo Domingo
Great museum and the plaza in front of the cathedral is one of the most picturesque spots.

Mercado Juarez & Mercado 20 de Noviembre
The largest markets with food stalls and more baskets of chapulines than you can imagine. (Actually 2 markets on 2 adjacent blocks)
Ex-Convento de Santa Catalina
You can explore the interior of this castle-like building, now the Quinta Real Hotel, which occupies an entire city block. The hotel is also a great place to stay!
Ethnobotanic Garden
You have a book a tour to see this garden, but here's a cheat: You can see a lot of it from inside the upper stories of the adjacent Centro Cultural de Santo Domingo!
Gifted tree from Palo Alto
Alex's hometown of Palo Alto gifted this tree to Oaxaca to commemorate 50 years of being sister cities.

One of the best shops to buy artisan goods. Made by and supporting women from smaller villages.
