Katie and Ben met as all great love stories of their generation do: on a dating app. The two first started exchanging messages in July 2014 and had their first date at the Golden Gate Tap Room, a beer hall filled with arcade style games. The next day, Katie left for Ireland while Ben was in the homestretch of the baseball season with the Oakland A’s putting a good month between their first and second date. During this time, Ben was offered a job with the San Diego Padres and on their third date broke the news to Katie that he had taken the job and had to move in the next two weeks. The pair spent those weeks together fast-tracking many month’s worth of dates with dinners, drinks and watching the SF Giants win the World Series. Unsure of what would happen next, Katie, at the urging of her friend and bridesmaid Jess, came down to San Diego to visit Ben in November and the two officially became a couple. They dated long distance for two and a half years racking up copious amounts of Southwest points. In December of 2016, Katie accepted a new job so she could join Ben in San Diego. Finally living in the same city again, they have been able to redeem those Southwest points and continue travel, now with the same home airport.

In late August, a trip to San Diego’s Ocean Beach to watch the sunset and grab dinner turned in to the perfect opportunity for Ben to pop the question. As the sun was setting on another picturesque San Diego day, they got up from watching the sun and Ben dropped to one knee to ask Katie to be his bride. Katie excitedly said, “Yes!” and they celebrated at a beachfront restaurant toasting to the future.
