A quick 45 minute drive south of Anchorage will put you in the cozy mountain town of Girdwood. Girdwood has excellent hiking opportunities via the Winner Creek trail and the summer trails on Mount Alyeska. If you hike up, you can ride the tram down for free! Make a day of it and grab dinner at Jack Sprat. http://www.jacksprat.net/
Depending on what you are looking for or how much time you have Anchorage has excellent access to hiking. If you are looking for something quick, we recommend Flattop Mountain, the hike only takes a couple hours round trip and offers great views of the city and mountains. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous O'Malley Peak is a more technical trail that will take you high above the surrounding peaks, make sure to look into it before you go so you are prepared. For flatter trails that will take you far back into the beautiful valleys of the Chugach Mountains Front Range we recommend either Rabbit Lakes trail or Williwaw Lakes.
Aviation and Alaska are forever linked, it would be a big mistake to not go see some of this beautiful state from the air. Rust's offers quick tours around Anchorage and longer trips all over the state, they are a professional organization with friendly and experienced pilots.
