How We Met

April 2015

Lauren: While out for a couple of drinks with a friend at Figueroa Mountain brewery, I noticed this handsome guy across the bar. We made eye contact several times and by the time my friend and I were ready to leave, I knew I needed to talk with him. I went over to introduce myself and when he input my number into his phone, he already had it! It was meant to be. (Apparently we 'clicked' both in person and previously on Tinder.) On our third date, in between a painting class and a concert, we found ourselves at the courthouse (our ceremony venue!). A guitarist happened to be playing under the archway and Sean asked me to dance right there under the stars. And from then on, I've never wanted to dance with anyone else.

The Engagement

A Tale of Two Hikes

Sean: Saturday March 30th Lauren and I set out for a morning hike like we often do on the weekends. It's a beautiful climb out of Montecito that ranges from 3-5 miles, depending on how we feel on the particular day. Well this day my stomach was chock-full of butterflies, as I was carrying an engagement ring in my pocket that had been hidden in a sock drawer for the past 3 months. We got up the mountain quickly and sat together on a broad stone bench that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. As we sat there having idle chat my brain was racing in excitement to finish the plan I had put into place the day before. 16 hours prior I left work early to do the exact hike that we were doing that Saturday morning. I carried a 2x4, shovel and sign I had made that read, "Happily Ever After". Near the top of the hike I dug a small hole for the 2x4 post. I then hid the sign and 2x4, covered the hole with a rock, and raced down the mountain; strolling into my office just in time to meet Lauren, dodging questions of why I was so sweaty and covered in sunscreen after a long day in my office... Flash forward to the stone bench the following morning. From that vantage point I could just make out where I had hidden the sign and post, but Lauren's view was fortunately obstructed. The time was right, I made up an excuse about having to use the bathroom and hustled down to pull the goods from the their hiding spot and set up the sign. I ran back up the mountain and plopped down on the bench again. When we headed back down the mountain, I made sure Lauren was leading the way. Within two minutes we came upon the sign and as Lauren turned to question what was going on, I dropped to a knee and asked her to marry me. In the most exhilarating moment of my life, she said yes, we kissed, and captured some photos. Hiking back down the mountain I have no doubt many of my butterflies from that morning were now humming around Lauren as well :)
