We met while we were students at Yavapai College in Prescott Az. Cody had just transferred from Trinidad and needed an elective credit, while I was enrolled in one last class before I left for my biology internship. That class for both of us was Spanish 101. Cody saw me first outside, but I didn’t see him until I shuffled into class and quickly took a seat- next to him. We were paired together for all of the typical “first day of class” icebreakers. I learned he was from Colorado and he adored being outside. Remarkably, he wasn’t deterred by my lacking Spanish skills and asked me to lunch as the class concluded. We ate, chatted and laughed right up until the moment I had to depart for my Pilates class. I was twitterpated the whole way back to my car. When I got there, I looked at my Pilates clothes folded neatly in the passenger seat. After a brief pause I put my car keys away and began to head back to the cafe. I was practically running because I was so worried he was going to be gone by the time I made it back. As I approached, and saw him sitting just as he had been, I was overtaken by complete joy. I promptly sat down and said “I forgot my Pilates clothes”. We enjoyed each other’s company the rest of the day: listening to music, sharing stories about family and travels, talking about dreams and aspirations. I had never been so at ease while being around someone I’d just met. I was immediately head over heels and giddy as could be. We proceeded to have lunch together every single day after class. We went on many adventures that brought us all over Arizona, all the way to Tucson, Flagstaff and everywhere in between. When the semester concluded, I left for Panama, and Cody moved back to Colorado. When I returned, I joined him in Grand Junction and we have been making a home for ourselves ever since. Last June we welcomed our son, Jerome to the world and he has made our lives a dream.
