There is so much to do around Balboa Park! Between the zoo, the gardens, seventeen different museums, the Spanish Village Art Center, and California Tower, you can spend multiple days here and still not see everything!
There are a ton of great breweries around San Diego, some of which have multiple locations. Check out Stone, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Pizza Port, and Karl Strauss for the San Diego standards, or check out Mike Hess, Belching Beaver, Mikkeller, the Lost Abbey, Rip Current, and AleSmith Brewing Company for some of the local hops.
Take a ferry over to Coronado and rent a bike or scooter to tour the island's many restaurants and shopping destinations. Hang out on the beach or stop at Hotel del Coronado for a spa day or cocktail on the water.
Take a day trip for hiking, camping, and the Pioneer Museum in Julian, California. Sample some local apples--most importantly at Julian Pie Company (https://www.julianpie.com/) where you can get a hearty slice of Dutch apple pie à la mode after a hike. Julian Station is a cool spot, with four separate tasting rooms, local art, food, and live music.
Your flight didn't accidentally land on the Amalfi Coast! You are in Little Italy, a northern neighborhood of downtown San Diego. Each Saturday morning, Little Italy hosts one of the biggest farmers markets.

The Padres are out of town the weekend of our wedding, but if you get into town early, you can catch the Pads take on the Rockies (8-11 August) or Rays (12-14 August). Petco Park also hosts tours where you can learn about the history of the team, the architecture of the stadium, and the revival of the Gaslamp District of San Diego.
After you check out the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, head about 45 minutes from La Jolla (and just outside Escondido), the Safari Park offers a tram service which will take you through the free range zoo where you can see animals closer to their natural habitats.
