The drive to the Outer Banks is about 8 hours. Here are some pro travel tips and options:
LEAVE EARLY! The route will take you on the same drive as people going to the Jersey shore and to Ocean City, MD so it can get busy.
There are plenty of places to stop for food and bathroom breaks along the way.
There is one main bridge to get onto the island and one main road on the island. It can get extremely backed up so we have found the travel is much easier when we leave the day before and stay in Virginia Beach.
It breaks the drive up and the biggest benefit is the next day you can leave for the Outer Banks and beat all of the traffic getting onto the island, I HIGHLY recommend this option. We normally stay near the Town Center area at the Hilton Garden Inn.
