Sicily Accommodation Guide

We've created an 8-page document that covers all the basics you'll need to know for planning your trip to Sicily. Think of it as a more comprehensive and organized version of this Travel tab. There's information and links on everything from plane and car travel, hotels & rental homes/apartments, and even local travel tips and advice for being in Sicily as an American. We've put a considerable amount of work into this, and we believe you'll find it helpful. Of course, don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions!

DRIVING IN SICILY

Obtain an International Driving Permit. This can be done through AAA starting 6 months before its intended use (March 2026) Don't worry, you don't need to be an AAA member when applying for an IDP. All the information you need is linked in the "View" button below. As this should always be the case, be sure to drive safely and follow the speed limit signs (there are speed traps throughout the island). Here's a long, but very informative article about driving in Sicily. There is some good info in the replies at the bottom, as well: https://blog.ricksteves.com/cameron/2018/06/sicily-driving/ Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL): Some cities have restricted areas known as ZTLs, where unauthorized vehicles are prohibited. There's a good chance you won't come across these, but driving into these zones can result in large fines. For awareness, here is a ZTL sign: https://www.autoeurope.co.uk/UK/assets/Image/reading-ztl-signs-in-italy.jpg

Flight

Catania (CTA)

There are two main airports in Sicily, but Catania (CTA) is the closest option to the venue (~1 hour drive). It is HIGHLY recommend that you arrive at least one day early, as unpredictable eruptions by Mt. Etna can delay or even cancel flights to CTA. We would hate for you to be late to our big day due to a volcano eruption. (But hey, at least you would have a pretty epic story to take back to the States!) Palermo (PMO) is the other major airport on the island, about 2.5 hours northwest of the venue. Delta will be offering direct flights from JFK to CTA at this time, and Southwest is expected to announce a couple of international partnerships by the time flights should be booked. American and United both offer good flight options as well, in addition to plenty of European airlines once across the Atlantic.

Rental Car

Rent from the airport

Even though Uber and Taxi services are available in Sicily, both options are VERY expensive. Due to this, and to maximize travel freedom, we recommend that all guests reserve rental cars ahead of time. Most large car rental companies operate out of both major Sicily airports, so feel free to book through your preference! Just note that manual vehicles are common in Sicily, so if you need an automatic transmission, make sure to book your rental well in advance. We also recommend booking a smaller vehicle. Some of these Italian streets can be narrow!

UPDATE YOUR PASSPORTS

Since the pandemic, lead times for documentation updates from the government have been unreliable and sluggish to say the least. Take a moment now, while we have ample time, to check and make sure that your passports are up to date and will still be valid come September 2026!
