Catania is the largest city on the eastern side of Sicily. It's a very walkable city with historic churches, an incredible food scene that ranges from authentic street food to Michelin-starred restaurants, and a vibrant nightlife (the fish market transforms into a club when the sun sets). It's also a great "home base" city for exploring nearby places such as Mt. Etna and Taormina.
Palermo is the capital of Sicily and the largest city on the western coast. The city’s rich history is reflected in its architecture, churches, and museums, including the unique Capuchin Catacombs. Like Catania, Palermo also has a buzzing food scene, with lively markets such as Ballarò and Vucciria offering a true taste of local Sicilian cuisine.
Best known to many as the filming location for White Lotus season 2, Taormina is a picturesque town that overlooks the Ionian Sea. It is home to some excellent pastries and granitas (BAMBAR is highly recommended), as well as the Teatro Antico di Taormina, a 3rd-century Greek theater.
Mount Etna is Europe’s most active volcano and Italy’s tallest peak outside of the Alps. Hiking trails can be freely explored throughout the volcano’s foothills, while guided excursions are required for those interested in reaching the peak (11,165 ft). The surrounding area is also known for its vineyards, epic lava-stone landscapes, and small mountain towns scattered across Etna’s slopes.
The Valle dei Templi is a UNESCO World Heritage site that features incredibly well-preserved 5th-century Greek temples and art pieces. Many say it even rivals the Parthenon! The Valley of the Temples is located in Agrigento, a small city on the southwestern coast of Sicily, about 2 hours away from Piazza Armerina (the wedding venue).
Sicily is home to a thriving wine region, with vineyards located around Mount Etna and across the countryside. Many wineries offer guided tastings, vineyard tours, and relaxed lunches featuring local wines and regional cuisine. You have your choice to visit independently, book transportation-included tours (getyourguide.com is a good starting point), or plan an overnight stay directly at a vineyard. Wineries that have been recommended to us include Benanti Winery on the eastern side near Mt. Etna, and Donnafugata on the western side near Marsala.
