How we met

First comes love, then comes a ten-year gap, then comes marriage:

[Written by Melissa] Tyler and I met in college at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. It was Spring semester and we were freshmen going into our sophomore year. We were 18 or 19 years old. One of my best friends Hilari (who is a bridesmaid) and I were President and Vice President of the Foss Hall Resident Council for the dorm we lived in. We were out scouting for people to fill the open spots in the resident hall council, going door to door and knocking. I still remember knocking on Tyler’s door. He opened the door to what can only be described as the stereotypical male college dorm room. It was dark, messy and had a questionable aroma. There he was with his gamer headphones on and a cute smirk. He was a “bad boy” with gauged ears, tattoos, and wasn’t afraid to wear purple. We became instant friends. We laughed and enjoyed each other’s company. He made me my first mixed drink! He appealed to my goody-two-shoes nature simply because he knew how to have a good time. He made college fun. Eventually, we decided being friends wasn’t good enough and started dating. As most teenage relationships go, it was dramatic, immature, but a ton of fun. We lasted about a year before deciding we should call it quits. Fast forward nearly a decade later. I got a wild hair and decided to find him on LinkedIn. I was curious about him. Before and during our relationship in college, Tyler and I were friends above all else and I was hoping he was doing well. I saw he was indeed doing well and felt satisfied. Little did I know that Tyler paid for the premium subscription for LinkedIn and could see that I was looking at his profile. He messaged me, teased me about it and invited me out for coffee. We picked up where we left off all those years ago with him making me laugh so hard that I cried and me making him blush from the sheer volume of said laugh. The rest, as they say, is history.
