From Lab Partners to Life Partners

Notre Dame, circa 2013

Many of you know that we have been together for quite a while. We started dating in September 2015, which was our senior year of college. What you may not have known is how we met, which was sophomore year in Organic Chemistry Lab, where we were assigned as lab partners. We became instant friends, and had many classes together from there on out given we were both Science-Business majors interested in medicine. Although honestly, we were slightly more interested in Notre Dame football and Thursday nights at Feve at that time. By the beginning of senior year, we were officially a couple. Grantland actually asked me to be his girlfriend on September 11, 2015 and I said "absolutely not, we can't have this date as our anniversary." Instead of asking me the following day, he waited an additional 6 days. In writing this, neither of us recall where our first date was, but we both think it was either the Chipotle on Eddy Street or Pizza King. After graduation, we both moved to Chicago - Grantland to the city, and I home to the suburbs. Grantland started working for Deloitte at a local client in Chicago, while I was an assistant at an oral surgery clinic. It was a great first 6 months in Chicago, with the Bears in the playoffs and the Cubs winning the World Series. After that first year, I was in the thick of the medical school application process and had started a new job as a consultant in non-profit fundraising, while Grantland started traveling to a new client in Nashville each week. We both lived downtown, but saw each other less than we'd like with both of us often traveling for work. I started medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 2018, - a much different daily life than a traveling consultant. Grantland was still traveling to Nashville, though we continued to enjoy seeing each other each weekend in Chicago, and traveling when we could. Like majority of people, our lives changed pretty dramatically in early 2020 with the pandemic. Medical school became fully remote, and the uncertainty and stress around the medical community led me to help lead some of Chicago's major COVID testing efforts. Separately, after traveling non-stop for 2.5 years, Grantland transitioned to fully remote work overnight, taking an emergency flight home from Nashville, not knowing he wouldn’t return for over a year. The one silver lining of this time was we were able to see each other more often than we had since graduation. With our remote work and my need to keep a very tight-knit circle given my interactions with patients, Grantland and I were holed up together for much of the beginning of 2020. We moved in together in June to a new place in Humboldt Park - I started my third year of medical school in clinical rotations, while Grantland was dealing with the significant impact of COVID at his work in healthcare consulting. Near the end of 2020, I decided I wanted to foster a dog. This was something I'd thought about for a while. We decided to sign up with One Tail at a Time, one of Chicago's biggest rescues. Along came an energetic, animated, and rather needy one-year old white pitbull mix and well, I failed at fostering and we officially adopted Rosa on December 23, 2020. The new year (2021) continued on with more clinical rotations for me, remote work for Grantland, and tug-of-war for Rosa. By summer, I was applying for residency in General Surgery, and in March 2022, I "matched" at Harbor-UCLA. Our next chapter would be in Los Angeles, and we were both excited but sad to leave our life in Chicago. After medical school graduation, we traveled to the south of France where Grantland (finally) decided to put a ring on it. We moved to LA in June 2022 and I started surgical residency shortly after. Grantland continues to work remote, and Rosa is loving the southern CA weather. Residency is busy, but we still find time for each other. We can't wait to celebrate with all of you in January and see what our next chapter has in store.
