The Winter of 2017/2018, Graham and Emma’s mutual friends Gracie and Max organized a group of friends to rent a house near Lake Tahoe for the ski season. Despite sharing numerous friends, Emma and Graham had somehow never met before. On the first weekend of the season, Graham offered one of Emma’s best friends Sally a ride up to Tahoe, and Sally asked if Emma could ride with them too. Graham picked them up at Sally’s office and Emma took shotgun. In honor of the Winter Olympics which were being held in South Korea, they listened to K-Pop, danced, and laughed the entire 4+ hour drive. What could otherwise have been an arduous car ride was a total blast. Graham and Emma formed a fast friendship, but only overlapped one other weekend during the season. That summer, they reconnected before Outside Lands music festival at their mutual friend Steph’s pre-party. When they got to OSL, Emma realized she had forgotten her ID so Graham offered to buy her drinks. They were attached at the hip all day and night, and Emma was so distracted by Graham that her phone was stolen right out of her purse! She was unfazed as nothing could ruin the amazing time they were having together. When the show wrapped, Graham realized his phone had run out of battery. Without any working phones to call a Lyft home, Graham and Emma walked miles through Golden Gate Park to Graham’s apartment in NOPA, where he called her a ride. By the time she got home and opened iMessage on her laptop she already had a text from Graham checking to make sure she got home safe and to say that he couldn't stop smiling. Neither could she. The next day they took a picnic to the beach followed by a dinner date a few nights later, and the rest is history!
It was a perfect spring day. Wednesday, April 1st, 2020. Big blue sky, not a cloud in sight. Emma and Graham were working from their apartment in San Francisco due to COVID-19 and went for a walk after wrapping up work for the day. As they set out on their familiar loop through nearby Fort Mason, they ducked behind the old abandoned General's Residence to a lawn overlooking the bay. The lawn was covered in a bloom of white and yellow flowers and the air was clear after some rain over the weekend. As they looked over the bay, a hummingbird caught their eye and flew up into a nearby tree. As Emma looked up, Graham took that as his queue and got down on one knee. He hadn’t written anything down, trusting that the words would come, and they did. Through tears, she said yes. In the excitement of the moment they nearly left the lawn without a single picture, but did manage to document the moment with a few selfies. They then continued their walk, overwhelmed with happiness and looking forward to everything to come.
