How Grace Met James

I had to take an intro class for the School of History first semester of freshman year at ASU. The class was tiny, maybe 10 people altogether. About two weeks in, my professor mispronounced a word and looked to the class for help. I’ll never miss an opportunity to show off and be helpful at the same time, so I was quick to give the right pronunciation. To my surprise, the cute guy that sat across from me was just as quick. Twenty minutes later, our professor told a joke, we were the only two that laughed, and I was officially interested. As we left class that day, I realized he was behind me, walking out the door, and in my desperation to start a conversation, whipped around and yelled a very dumb question at him. “WHAT’S YOUR MAJOR?!” Keep in mind, we’ve just left an intro class for the School of History, of which all students major in… History. Seemingly unperturbed by how weird that was, he offered to walk back to the dorms with me and even asked for my number. During that 10 minute walk back, I realized we were compatible in a rare, precious way. We went on our first date about a week later, and made it official two weeks after that. We’ve been in lockstep since.

How James Met Grace

In fall of 2016 I was starting my freshman year at Arizona State University. As part of my history degree I was pursuing, an introductory course was required that first semester for people in the history college. It was a smaller course with no more than 10-15 people in the class. I don't remember many people from that course, but I met the woman who would become my best friend and the love of my life in that classroom. I immediately was smitten with her and thought she was beautiful at first sight. Throughout the first few classes I got to hear how she interacted with the class and professor and was impressed with her wit and charm during discussions. She was the real deal. After a few classes as we were leaving one day, she turned to me and sparked a conversation with the best question a college freshman could ask another, "What's your major?" she asked me. Being in the history school, I responded with history education and realized her dorm room was the same direction as my next stop. We chatted and walked together on the way back and it was obvious to me that she was something special and that we seemed compatible. I asked for her phone number and we messaged before going on our first date in early September and making it official later that month on September 20, 2016. We're incredibly excited to take the next step of our journey together 10 years later to the day on September 20, 2026 surrounded by our loved ones as we become husband and wife.
